NOLA Article about Florida

If one state adopts it it won't take long for others to follow.

He makes a good point...so are they going to require a license or registration on bicycles next? I can see license requirement for sailboats being reasonable but on canoes and kayaks it seems a bit ridiculous.

We need to start to get a grip on how many of these boats are out there,"

AKA "Think how many registration fees and fines we could collect"

FWIW, Some states already do this

Trent Anthney, president of Florida Professional Paddlesports Association, said they would consider supporting some type of registration if there was assurance the revenue would actually benefit non-motorized boating.

Like that would ever happen.

To the poster who said its reasonable for sail boats, most sail boats are registered. Any sailboat of any size has power. This would be for hobiecat type vessels that are closer to paddlecraft than larger sailboats in many ways.

I know if it has any motor battery/gas it's required.

I know at least in Ohio, if it floats and is not inflatable, it is usually required

Brack Barker, a professional kayaking guide near Gainesville and a member of the working group, said paddlers would have little to gain from a registration requirement and neither would the state except in one respect.

"It's all about the money," said Barker, a former Florida Department of Environmental Protection law-enforcement officer.

Yep.

Pretty soon they'll try to tax the very air we breathe. Facking leeches.

Oklahoma actually used to require registration for all kayaks and canoes but no longer does.

I really like the bicycle analogy, although in some states if you use your bike on a roadway, it is required to be registered.
