Originally was going to go with a 16ft but builder talked me into a 17 for extra space when duck hunting with 3 guys. He says a 50 isnt underpowered at all but I'm still thinking of jumping to a 60hp. The 60hp is 30 lbs heavier.

I've never heard somebody complain about having too much motor, but I've heard A LOT of people complain about not having enough.

I have a Yamaha F60 tiller on a 1848. To me, it's the perfect motor for that boat. I cruise close to 40 solo (faster than I really want to go), and 36ish with three guys, two dogs, dekes, and gear. I doubt I'd be happy with a 50.

I subscribe to the belief that you should always buy the most motor you can afford/the boat can handle.

My dad has a 1652 with a 50. We put a 4 blade prop on and it gets out of the water pretty quick and carries a load well. I think the extra foot will actually help you get on step better, but may not be quite as fast.

That being said, I'd go with the 60 if the price increase is not too substantial.

Mind sharing the builder and/or ball park price for a rig like that? I have a 1652 hulk that needs some tlc, trying to figure out if it's worth fixing.

Always buy the most HP you can afford.

Go with the Tohatsu 50, have the restrictor plate removed, you have a 60hp that's will run like a spotted arse ape.
