Does anybody have insurance on a boat with a bigger outboard than the USCG plate calls out?

Geico said no, Im just trying to figure out who you guys use. I'm also worried if something actually happens they will just say that my boat was over powered and its my fault.

Yeah I was just joking but really wondered about the legality. I have no clue and am anxious to read what comes.

IDK but I have a 50hp Merc on a 14' Alweld with a tunnel. It's rated for a 25, it's pretty scary

I'm don't think you will find an insurance company to insure an overpowered boat.

ETA: and this is why

Is there really such a thing as overpowered. Overweight, for sure, but overpowered is still on how you drive it.

Well, according to the USCG and insurance companies, yes.

yeah, I think you could make a case for either. Im just curious about the insurance. Progressive just said they would insure mine as long as it was under 500 hp. But i question if the progressive night shift word would hold up if something ever went wrong.

Those plates are from the manufactures, coast guard doesn't care.

Maybe some states out west or up northeast might have laws, but I'd guess a lot of the southern states don't care either.

I can see insurance, but shop around and you will find someone. Now if you are negligent in the overpowering or operation, you are screwed. But a little over and still under weight should be able to get by.

You might find a company that will sell you a policy to cover your boat.

When you file for a loss, and they look into it, don't be shocked if they deny your claim. They live for stuff like that.

Well, that all depends on whose lawyer you talking to.

I do

my boat was rated for 150 by the manufacturer
I called them and requested a new plate since a 175 is the exact same transom weight as a 150. They sent me a new plate and I got insured no problem

it's about transom weight not HP

That new plate idea is a good idea. Obviously it depends on what kind of accident you get into for needing insurance. If you back your truck into the water at the boat launch, I don't think HP will matter. But if you hit a wave going 75 and flip your boat, they probably gonna care.

This. ill also give an example. Xpress sells the h20b with a 115hp yamaha and a 115hp rated yellow plate. To get a 150 plate for the h20b all you need to do is add hydraulic steering and bam you are legal. Also they sell the H22B with the 150 with the same exact transom so sometimes its so a dealer can get a certain price point.

Go over to bass boat central and the Xpress board. They have lots of guys running X19s with 175 and 200 SHO motors. Not sure if they care about the coast guard plate though

Easiest way is just remove the HP sticker and put a lower number sticker on there

An X19 is rated for a 200. Those boats aren't overpowered.
