I'm in the beginning stages of planning a pheasant hunt for my dad as a birthday present to go hunting with all 5 of his sons.

As part of this trip, we would like to get him a gun he has always wanted - a 20ga o/u with a straight/English style stock.

In reviewing the retail options available, the only guns I found even in the remote ballpark price range are the Browning Citori Superlight Feather and the Beretta Silver Pigeon (a couple models come with the straight stock I think). I also see that Yildiz makes a straight stock version, but don't think it's available retail in the US.

So I guess I have 2 questions:
1. What other retail options do I have in the sub $2k price range for a straight stock 20ga o/u? Am I missing some?

2. Any clue on a ballpark figure for converting a pistol-grip style stock to a straight/English style stock? And any recommendations in Houston, OKC, BR, or NOLA for someone who would do that kind of work?

Thanks!

Just a heads up, you might want to let your wife buy it this time.

For a serious answer, check cabelas gun library on their website. You can refine the searches to find exactly what you want and it searches all their gun libraries throughout the country.

Lol. I'll let one of my non-felonious brothers do it. Maybe the one down in BR.

And I actually got a call back from Academy yesterday apologizing for the whole ordeal and letting me know I am cleared to purchase the gun now. Was unexpected but appreciated.

Are y'all opposed to a SXS?

I'd check the webs until a LC Smith field grade in solid condition popped up

I don't think you are missing any, the reality is there really aren't that many made at any price point in comparison to pistol grip stocks and most of the entry grade guns come with pistol grips. Check out Cole Gunsmithing They are a Beretta dealer and have wood sets listed online. The might be able to assemble a Beretta cheaper than buying a silver pigion and swapping out the wood. They have some very nice looking straight stock blanks starting at $500.

He specifically mentioned o/u, so yeah for now an o/u is all we're looking for.

Very few old American shotguns had straight stocks, the ones that did were typically not field grade and will command a significant premium to the more common pistol grips

I have the browning Citori superlight with English stock in both 12 and 20ga. They are my best/well balanced shotguns I own. Paid $2500 a piece for them back in the '80's. You should be able to find a mint used one in your price range or pony up a little more for a new one.

Thanks. New the Citori Superlight Feather retails for around $2000 I think. I was just wondering if there was a less expensive option out there which apparently the answer is no.

Does anyone have a rec on a gunsmith who could cut down a pistol stock on something like a yildiz and make it into a straight stock? This gun will probably only get used once a year.

Google converting a pistol grip to a straight stock. They don't look right, and if you have not held any o/u shotguns, I recommend dog my so. Some of the low grade ones swing like a 2x4, that goes against everything an o/u or a sxs is meant to be...

Just went through the process of purchasing a 20ga o/u for the wife and handled everything from the cheapest to the most expensive one I could find in OKC in the process.

I was shocked at how well the Yildiz swung which is what she ended up with. It swung better than every other gun I handled under the $1700+ guns. The berettas and brownings were on a different level though and they are sooooo smooth.

Yildiz definitely makes one.

Finding it might be a problem though.

Yeah, that's the conclusion I've come to as well. Academy is supposedly their exclusive American retailer, and they don't carry the English stock version.
