Anyone know where I can get some 9 gauge x 3/4 expanded metal that's flat for the grates?

Anyone know where I can get a dampener for the smoke stack? I can make my own if need be?

Best stuff to make the handle out of?

I'm open to comments, suggestions and smart remarks.

I started with this old scrap that was laying around. It had a pipe off the side of it, so that was the first thing that had to go.

Then once that was cut off, I put the grinder on it.

Then capped that hole with lots of heat and hammering, and made that the bottom of the grill.

Then marked my openings for the grill door.

Oops, the damn thing opened up on me, so I had to use ratchet ties to close it to put the caps on.

All sealed up, now ready to cut the second line for the opening.

And mark the ends so they open with the lid.

And this is where I left it.

Put your smoke stack where you cut out the old smoke stack.

I wish the one that was already mounted was smaller... it would have worked. I didn't need a 14-inch smoke stack to roll coal out of.

I don't know anything about welding, but you can use two rods when arc welding?

Yes. When you suck at cutting like me, you can use the second rod to fill in the gap.

I could have bent it to the curvature of the grill and layed it in the gap and welded over top or fed it in like you see here.

I know where you can get it, but it's an hour and a half away, but I am going there tomorrow and can pick it up if you can't find it around here.

ETA: Assuming you need about 6 square feet a 20 dollar bill will get it.

For sure, I was just messing with you. It looks promising. You asked about handles, I think my handles are made from rebar.

Yes, but too far away. If you don't mind cutting it, laying it out and welding it, you can make your grill out of 1/4" rod.

It's a "damper" and if you search that, you'll get plenty of links. Here's a couple.

8" damper
6" damper

Wood. Drill a hole through a 4"-6" piece of wood (that you turned to the appropriate diameter on your lathe) and put rod through it, bend the ends and weld them to the lid. Use a smoothe finish on the wood if you want to keep it from turning black from soot.

Have you tried holding your cutting torch with your dominant hand?

When you figure out what size pipe you using for an exhaust give ne the measurements and I'll give you the measurements for a template. It will come out perfect. Even if you want a hole in the big pipe I figure that out as well.

Great advice guys.

The grill is going to Cocodrie, so I'm hoping to get stainless expanded metal as the other grates will last about 6 months down there with the combination of salt air and heat. Doubt I can get that for $20 bucks as mentioned above, but I appreciate the offer.

Anyone know where to get that in BR?

That is referred to as "South of the Border Heliarc-ing"

My BIL build his pit using dampers like this, I prefer them to anything else I've cooked on you can completely close it off and have actual control over the fire

For handles you can buy the springs like they use on slag chipping hammers, that's the standard in pit handles
