Moved to Mandeville a few years ago and finally pulled the trigger and got a 11.5 foot Perception s.o.t. fishing kayak. I'm ready to learn.

Head down to Leeville in the morning.

There will be close to 100 kayak anglers down there fishing a tournament, with a weigh in being held at Topwater marina from 2-3pm. Great opportunity to see how people rig their kayaks and pick the brains of people who have been doing this for years!

Wear your pfd and if you don't have a bright colored yak, get a flag.

If you have a small hole in the bottom, don't tell yourself "I can still make a quick fishing trip, I'll patch the hole later"

Not much to say really. Be safe (wear a pfd, fish an area you feel comfortable) and have fun.

It will take you a handful of trips to figure out how to best rig your kayak.

Heat safety is big right now. Figure out a cooler setup and bring plenty of water. I recommend convertible pants and long sleeve shirt. The heat is going to make you want to not wear a PFD and because of that, spend the money on an auto inflate PFD.

Use buddy system and always have float plan.

There are several good spots for learning. It will take a few trips to get a feel for paddling, fishing, learning how you want it rigged, etc

If you hear a motor, get your head on a swivel and make sure you're seen. If you hear what sound like someone trying to pull start a motor, that's an alligator, leave her alone.

Do yourself a favor and buy a stake out pole or marsh anchor.

Always remember that you have to paddle back.

Once you fish a few times you'll want a $1000 kayak. Then a $1500 and so on. I'm up to $2,000 right now without accessories

I like fishing in rivers because I find it better to fish with a current moving me slowly.

Paddle upstream and fish back. This way you know you can always get back to your car.
