Well I don't have my mountain legs at least.

Here are some random thoughts of mine from my trip this week. Monday I hiked up Mt Mitchell in NC. Right at 6 miles with something like 3700 feet in elevation gain. Took me right at 4 hours with a full pack. The website reviews were not joking when they classify it as strenuous. My legs and back were shot by the top. It was foggy as heck so there were no views. The trail was 12" wide at points. Basically just an uphill grind through the woods. There were a few creeks to break the monotony.

The trail was extremely rocky and had tons of tree roots. Near the top there were large slick rock faces to climb

Got to the top. Set up camp and ate. It rained all night. The winds blew 20+ mph all night. Broke down camp at 6 the next morning in the rain. Walked (basically ran down along some sections) down the trail the next morning in the rain. Almost rolled a few ankles. Did bust my arse a few times. Took about 3 hours. Somehow avoided any blisters.

All in all this is just a hike to say you did it I guess. Wasn't very scenic, at least during my visit. Was mainly just something I wanted to do for myself. The sign at the top made all the pain worth it.

Is there a way I can just drive to the top and take a picture with the sign?

Awesome. Love that hike. Go to Clingmans dome and hike down to deep creek for some stellar views.

Beautiful country. I used to live in Banner elk but never made it to Mt mitchell. I used to wander off in the woods when I would get homesick. When first snow hit that winter, this coonass parked his car and left it there till the snow melted. Would love to back again.

Was this a one day/night hiking and camping trip? I've been looking at doing something similar, what did your supplies consist of?

Yep. Left my truck at around noon and got back about 10 the next morning.

I carried
Tent
Sleeping bag
Extra socks and shirt
Rain jacket and pants
Stove/gas/lighter
100oz camel
Mountain house pack and trail snacks in a bear canister
Pot to boil water and spork
Flashlight
Toilet paper/toothbrush/toothpaste
First aid
Compass
Other things I'm sure I'm forgetting

I'm going to work on reducing the weight of my big 3. Just not in a position to buy super lightweight stuff right now.

I've posted this before but I'll say it again. Wal Mart has some very good, cheap and light weight summer/spring gear. Ditch the tent completely and go hammock/tarp. Or just tarp. It can be done cost effectively. What'd you do for water?

I used all of it so I'm not sure what I could have ditched.

I would have used my complete hammock setup (rain fly and bug net) but they didn't have a way to set it up at the Mt Mitchell campsite.

Do you know the appropriate weight of your pack?

I'd rather carry a few extra pounds if it translates into a higher degree of comfort. I did the tarp routine a few times and got my arse chewed up by bugs. I bought a Sierra Designs tent that weighs about 3-1/2 lbs. The extra comfort is worth the extra weight to me.
