Hummingbirds/Hummingbird feeders

I put my feeder out last year and had a male claim it as territory within a week or so. He had two females that visited often, but I never saw more than 3.
About a month ago I was in the back yard and one buzzed me. When I realized it was a hummingbird and not a gigantic bug it reminded me to put my feeder out. It's been out over a month and ants got in it. I washed it out and changed the nectar and hung it in another spot about week ago. We ain't seen shite. I do have petunias and red geraniums in the vicinity as attractants as well.
I want this...
Was I too late putting it up? Looking back, changing the location probably screwed up any territory claim, but I had to get it away from the sugar ants. Any tips? Experiences to draw from?

that pic was probably taken during migration. My mom gets hummingbirds like that 1-2 weeks twice a year. usually March & September. You might have been late this year- not sure when the migration was. That said, leave the feeders up and keep fresh food in them. You should have some in a week or two.

I've seen as many as 9 at a feeder at my house during various parts of the year. Right now, I believe I have three different ones visiting. One is really bold. She will sit in a small shrub next to my feeder while I'm standing about 3 feet away.

If I'm interpreting your user name correctly, I'm also in Caddo Parish. According to the migration map they hit us around mid March (coinciding with when I saw the first one). I don't know that you have to have your feeder out waiting on them, but I feel like I missed the push.

I don't think it matters if it's in a different spot. They'll find it when they're in the area.

I usually have one out but didnt get around to it this year yet.
I have this as well and every year I get buzzed like Russian jets most times while out in the back yard. At first I thought it was kinda cool but after a while its annoying. Last year I saw 5 birds at once flying around the feeder. It was a pretty cool sight to see.

Yep, Stonewall...close enough. I'm going to go ahead and put one out. Does it have to be around flowers or does that just help? I've seen them in the front yard around the roses much more than the backyard, where i have zero flowers at the moment.

Last year the male (im assuming) would sit in the floodlight about 15' from the feeder and chase off the other birds that would fly by the feeder. I have a chair right under the floodlight in which I would sit and watch. Me sitting there didnt phase the bird one bit.

It's not necessary, but from what I've read it helps a lot.

They make hand feeders if you have the patience. I'm sure having a bunch of them swarming would help.

Overwhelm them with feeders. Lots of them in a small area. They give up guarding them, and you can then have multiple birds sitting on the same feeder without as much fighting. I do it every fall.

I found a Ruby in SE LA on my concrete driveway. It was motionless and had its eyes closed.
I picked it up and put it in my hand and then it took off like a bat out of hell.
I have no idea what the it was doing just laying in the driveway stunned.

My shed was open and it was getting dark outside. The shed was nice and bright inside, and he landed on top of one of the lights. I didn't want him to be trapped in there all night, so I took my broom and figured if I just put I close to him he'll fly off. He didn't want to fly. After he went from one end of the light to the other a couple times, he hopped on the broom. I walked to the door thinking he'd just fly away when we got there, but he just chilled out on it. Then I just tried to pick him up, thinking the whole time "ok, now he's gonna fly when I go to touch him". He didn't move. He didn't even care. I held him for a little while, 10 minutes maybe, took some pics and I set him on some tree branches in my yard. He flew away after I set him down. It was dark by then. I didn't know if they flew in the dark. I figured they didn't for some reason.

Apparently this is true. We usually have about 6 feeders and most will have multiple birds on them.

Fall seems like the better time for us. I think they collect along the coast before the final push Southward over the Gulf.
I like the multiple feeder idea. My mom has a few laying around in her shed I may go claim. I was thinking it wasn't enough activity to justify an additional feeder, but I think you're on to something. The low activity is because one a-hole is running the show.
