I'm looking to get my first gun this week. I don't really know anything about guns or where to start. I want something cheap with cheaper ammo so that it won't cost me a lot to practice a good bit since I haven't really been around guns much. I want something to have in the house and carry in my car some. I found this one LINK

Any other recommendations are appreciated.

No, you don't.

Stick with any of the 9MM guns then. And stay away from that Taurus you linked. You can find a used Glock, XD, Ruger P series, Beretta, etc for a decent price if you look. Find a range that does rentals or ask your friends with handguns what they have. Go shooting at least 2-3 times trying different guns before you purchase.

Spend $100 more and get a Smith and Wesson Shield.

springfield armory
glock
smith and wesson

anything in the $400 ish and up range, really not necessary to go more than $600 ish. 9mm would be my recommendation

My dad has two of them now. Bought one for $199 at Palmetto State armory then got another when Academy had the BOGO father's day sale. It's been reliable. Not a beauty queen and not nearly as polished in fit and finish and operation as more expensive options but it does work. Trigger pull is very long and heavy but the trigger reset is short. I don't think you can do much better for $200 + FFL fees. Up your price to $350-400 and you open up a larger selection of much nicer firearms... but you are also doubling the price.

No reason to go to shield. Get full sized gun! 9mm.

You get what you pay for.

Spend an Xtra 200 and buy better quality.

I would probably be willing to spend up to $400 range but likely not much more than that.

Also, where is the cheaper place to buy guns in the BR area?

With that price range I can whole heartedly say you won't go wrong with this.

Ruger 9E. It's the basic version of the SR9.
Much better than that Taurus.

Just don't complain when the kids at Academy become the only firearms knowledge in town...

In that price range, assuming it's for self-defense, I hope you're shopping for an ex-wife or an arch enemy.

I'll echo the others with glock and Smith & Wesson M&P. One thing to consider is if this gun may be a carry gun. Something to consider if you plan that route. Stick with reputable and highly reliable makes. Some of those dirt cheap brands can be very hit or miss. Since you're new, do yourself a favor and get a real training class. What happens if you try to practice without the being under the tutelage of a good instructor is you will develop bad form and very habits.
I would up the budget to around $600. Plenty of good solid guns from the above 2 makes plus HK has a VP9 going for as low as $580, but mostly $630.

They don't seem to be popular with the OB crowd but you can get a really good CZ75 clone for not a lot of money. Under to around $300 doable for one of the CZ clones which will get you a 16-17 round capacity 9mm pistol that will be reliable and a good shooter. $350 max. SAR B6P, EAA Witness, Tri Star/Canik, Rock Island Armory MAP1/MAPP1, Armalite AR24, etc. All are dotted lined to Tangfolio or Canik or Sarsilmaz who all make a functional CZ75 clone. Only negative is if anything does go wrong with it and you have to rely on EAA's customer service which has never been highly thought of. Look up reviews of the SAR B6P. Less than $300 and most people seem to really like them as a low cost CZ clone.

Welcome to the OB. You've received some good suggestions here - stick with a full sized 9mm from a quality manufacturer.

And get some good training. Don't just go to a CC course and think you're an excellent shooter. Go to any of the Louisiana firearms companies and get some real training. I would advise Advantage Group, Bearco, and VATA group for training.

That was going to be my next question. Do those trainings also teach you how to clean your guns safely?
