Greg Ellifritz recently posted this link in his blog. Not sure how helpful it'll be, but some of it might be useful.

As the author points out, most of this is for "long term storage," as opposed to "conceal it while you run into Circle K for a slurpee."

"long term storage,

I dont think this is a good idea. It takes less than a minute to take the gun out and put it into your house at the end of the day and to load it back in at the beginning. Leaving a gun in the car for a very long time when you are not around it is just not a smart idea in my opinion.

why would I want to store my firearm in my vehicle long term?

i usually keep them fro a loonnnggg time. (I hate a note).

I just don't see why you wouldn't take the weapon out of the car when you get home. Seems you are begging for trouble leaving your pistol, let alone an UZI, in a vehicle.

I can't see it being safe or good for the gun.

My glock has only been out of my suv to shoot Armadillos in the driveway.

10mm buffalo bore. BOOM

I may have a kimber in the back.

There is a maverick 88 bolted to the storage box which is bolted to the floor.

taking a gun in and out of the vehicle just causes it to be noticeable. Also brings attention to it especially people with kids etc. Will also need to be responsible in bringing it back to vehicle every time you leave or else it won't be a reliable weapon ready at all times. That's too much of a daily chore imo for no good reason. I'm not worried about a $500 gun being stolen if that's the worst thing to worry about.

I don't care how much the gun is worth. If someone steals your gun, it is not good especially when they use it to cause harm.

There are ways to do this discreetly.

You always check for certain things when you leave the house. For me it is wallet, keys, headphones, phone, knife (and when I turn 21, a gun). Make it a part of your daily checklist and it wont be an issue.

if someone has intent to harm, they don't need my stolen gun to get something done. someone can break into my home nearly with just as little effort as breaking into my truck.

not always. but just another burden.

Yep, those stay on my kitchen counter unlike a loaded gun with kids in the house.

ok I can see that. I live in a rural area. You wouldn't see the gun unless you were in my carport. I don't have kids so thats not an issue for me.
At the risk of sounding like a nut, I usually take my Shield out of my car and put it on my side. I keep it with me for varmints (or anything else). I also just like wearing it

I'm not finding fault with storing one in a car, I just wouldn't do it intentionally.

I keep my pistol in my center console at all times. I bought a cheap P64 Makarov with my c&r license just for that purpose.

I'm not gonna get my shotgun, rifle, and glock in and out of my vehicle everyday.

It's in there when I need it. No chance of forgetting them while in a rush.

You got to be some kind of crazy or a felon to be hiding guns in the tailgate or zip tied underneath

Hard to argue with that.

But in fairness to the author, he does say, up front, "This article is geared more to hiding your weapons from those uninvited looters and scavengers who are inevitably going to come around in a social/government breakdown situation. Yes, I’m talking about the proverbial SHTF times."

I suspect most of us, if we're ever in a SHTF situtation, are gonna want our guns "in hand" instead of "in car."

It was posted simply as "food for thought." I don't think anybody here is paranoid, so it shouldn't send anyone off the deep end.

I keep ONE there, one next to the bed, one in the hall closet on the way out and one on the top of the entertainment ctr and one somewhere else.

Careful leaving your gun in a car during the summer can bend the steel due to the high heat. I read about this taking place online.
