*****PUP FOUND****** See post below

So, dad lost his best squirrel dog to a gator today. He's heartbroken and kinda down. So, he had 2 feist a male and female. He lost the female and the male has been gunshy for months after a squirrel took a chunk out of his nose.

Any advice as to how to get him back in the game. Since he has been bit he wants nothing to do with a squirrel. Trying to help Pops recover from his loss.

It's kind of cruel but you need to cripple 1 break his jaw.. And let him go at it.. Cruel but really works well!!

She had tree'd 6 squirrel and was barking again. But it wasn't her normal bark. Dad figured it was a neutra or a beaver. By the time he got to her she was crossing a lily covered bayou. He tried to call her back, used the whistle, she wouldn't have it. He tried to make her sit once she got to the other bank as she barked twords the water and had her front legs in. She continued to bark as he ran to the boat to retrieve her. About halfway to the boat she finished off her barking with a loud yelp. He hauled arse but it was to late. He searched and called for her with no luck. He's been training the 2 pups for over a year, they have helped him recover from a bad auto accident. It was a rough day for him and Marie. I only hope Gaston (the male) steps up and get back in it. She was the champ out of the 2, after Gaston got bit he lost all interest in chasing squirrel.

Wow, that's tough. Don't expect to lose a squirrel dog in the line of duty.

I just got a call from my dad, someone found and returned his dog today. Apparently the gator didn't get her; possibly snapped at her and scared the crap out of her so she ran off. Anyhow, Dad is pumped He's been heartbroken after losing his best pup. When the guy found the pup it was at night while frogging. She jumped right in the boat when he approached her. They frogged until daylight and when he pulled up to his camp she immediately treed 2 squirrels for him, he shot and ate them.

Coincidentally the guy that found the pup, lost his squirrel dog of 12 years last season. As a token of appreciation dad offered his other pup (yes, the squirrel bitten one) to the guy as a reward for returning his best pup. The guy was very appreciative and said he could break him of being scared of squirrels.

Anyway, I figured I'd share a happy puppy story with all of the unfortunate ones we've had lately.

Me neither, but 2 years ago, I was launching my boat to go duck hunting at lake dauterive, and a coonass pulled up in his boat with a basket full of big-arse frogs.

There is no question he can... A buddy & I were squirrel huntin friday and discussed this thread. A good squirrel bitin is great for a squirrel dog on occassion. Best of luck to all.

We are actually lookin for another good pup if anyone knows of one... Fiest, Terrier, or Cur preferrably.

I'll keep an ear open for Ya. Those 2 came out of the same litter from a guy in Mississippi, Feist. Champion bloodlines supposedly. I'll find out if they have any other litters in the works.
