I wonder how that story ends...did he just leave that moose there to go to waste? Seems like he could have put a little more effort into avoiding the situation to begin with.

Not really. That was a young moose feeling his oats. Bullwinkle was displaying aggression from the very first moment with his head down like that with an oblique posture, saying "this is MY fricking trail, bitch".

The snowmobile is stuck...can't turn around in that situation. Just a bad situation.
