How do you know when to buy new tires?

I'm a cheap arse and it kills me inside to spend money on something new when I know I have some more life to squeeze out.
I'm at about 47k on my stock Pirelli scorpion tires and it's getting awfully close. Not sure how much more I want to drag this out. Obvious "worst case" is i lose traction in the rain or tire blows out on me. And it looks like I'm riding on pee wee tires.
When does the OB pull the trigger? Or am I already behind the ball riding on stock tires on my non lifted/leveled F150

For street tires, put a penny with lincoln's head down in the treads. If you can see the top of his head it's time to change them.
On A/T, I'm really not sure. I just bought some Open Country A/T2 for my truck but I think I have about 5k more miles on the tires that are on there.

You could probably go 60k+ if you have rotated them regularly, but as you said, they may be declining in safety quick. Best bet is if you think they look really low on tread just start looking for deals on the next set you want. Order when you think you found a good deal.

im at 38k on my scoprions. i rotate them every oil change and they arent looking bad on tread depth but they didnt have much to start with. I was thinking the other day that i could hopefully go another 15-20k on them but they sure do look weak from the side

I've had 2 blowouts at speed, I no longer worry about replacing them too early. Friends that stretch them out worry me to death.

That's pretty good. Mine made it a shade under 30k.
Went with the Continentals this time. We'll see how they shake out.

Yeah I got a quote for the Cooper AT3 for 1030$ with everything included. Thinking that's a pretty good deal but I'm not picky. Just want a good all terrain

Just got Scorpions Mrs. True's vehicle.
They claim to be 65k tires. You experience does not give me confidence.

Most tires have an indicator located between every few treads. That's when that particular manufacturer recommends changing.

FYI I just put cooper at3's on my 2500 for $860 installed. I ordered the from discount tire online then paid $55 for all 4 mounted and balanced at my local tire shop.

Damn. Well the tire shop said these were lower profile or some shite so maybe that's why they cost more? I have the 20" rims
