I picked up a pretty rough 2000-2002 rancher a few years ago. It had its share of bumps and bruises but always ran strong. Only used it to get to and from the deer stand. Always used 100% gas and stabilizers.

Today it started right up but died the second I gassed it in reverse. Couldn't get it to turn over after that. Battery is new so all that left is spark gas and air.

Removed spark plug and sprayed wd40 in it and it would turn over once or twice. Pulled fuel line after the filter and gas poured out.
Next I removed the top of the carb. Everything is clean so I put a little gas in it and it started up. Now it will start most time on first try but sometiems it takes 4-5 tries. It Won't run unless I feather the gas. Took it for a spin and it's lacking power and backfiring. Sometimes it revs up like normal and others it's can only spudder along at 3mph.

I don't have time to tear it down so I'm bringing it to the shop but any ideas on what's going on?

will it run if you leave it choked? if so,check the intake hoses, vacuum lines and clamps, might be sucking some extra air.clean the supply line from the tank,if all that fails, rebuild the carb,it's simple.

Choke was never connected since I bought it and it never needed it to start. Only runs when feathering the gas. Need to feather it to change gears or it will die.

All vacuum lines are connected and seem in place. I never messed with them and never needed to. They are all zip tied in place. Air Intake lines are clear.

check the clamps between carb and engine, squeeze the fat rubber hose a bit and look for cracks.

Take bottom of the crab off and clean the jets. Friends did just what you describe. The main jet was sitting in the bowl. Cleaned, installed, ran well.....

Yea that's what it's gonna need. OP has carburetor removal denial syndrome. It's gonna happen whether you like it or not. Go ahead and bite the bullet and pull the carb off.

Check the petcock and inspect the hoses going to the carb. Sounds like it's not getting the required amount of fuel at idle (or just barely enough to idle). Also, make sure the tank vent line and cap vent are both clean of dirt

Agree. Sounds like plugged jet in carb.

No denial. Just moved time to mess with it further and was curious to see what others thought was going on.

Alright took the carb off. Bottom of carb screw are frozen. Soaked with wd40 and nothing. Sprayed seam foam I'm every inlet I could find. Let it soak a while. Went to start bike and full pouring out of a break in the line from the tank. Dry rot. Full overhaul on all lines and carb on Monday or Sunday if I can get to it

You can get fuel line at Carquest or NAPA

While you have the carb off, disassemble it and soak the parts overnight. Clean jets with small piece of wire

I plan on changing the fuel line tomorrow. Got all plastics off and it's ready to go. Carb is soaking in seafoam.

Concur on the rebuild and hose replacement.

I have a 2001 Rancher and it was doing the EXACT same thing. I replaced the spark plug, replaced all of my hoses, and eventually ended up rebuilding the carb, and it runs like a top now.

It's been a few years, but I picked up a rebuild kit for $21 at the ATV shop on Millerville in BR. The biggest improvement came when I replaced the jet.

Good point. I'll order one. Not much to change it out

All I did was hook it up and adjust the idle screw. Worked like new

Just went through the same thing on my rancher.

I ended up just ordering one from Amazon instead of rebuilding.

I also recommend pulling the petcock from the tank. Mine had a plastic filter on the pick up that had completely deteriorated. I had to change as i couldn't turn the fuel off either.

Alright update. New carb installed along with fuel filter and new lines. Bike runs perfectly. Idles all day and runs through the gears like new.

The new carb didn't have all of the hoses that the old one had. You can tell it has the ports but they aren't opened or threaded. Even the sensor wire inlet was threaded but no contact points inside. New design?

One issue...the line coming off the very bottom of the carb, I guess that is a drain line. On the old carb it wasn't connected to anything so I didn't connect it and now it's dripping gas. Where does this go? Maybe that sensor was a fuel shut off?
