I am looking to get a home defense shotgun and have a budget of about $450.

I am looking at a mossberg JIC series but I don't know if I want a pistol grip or not.

Any suggestions?

The judge will do the trick. My neighbor has one :holyshit:! They're serious.

If your budget is $450 you can get alot more than a JIC.

Take a look at the Remington 870 Tactical or a Benelli Nova Tactical. The Benelli will prob run a few dollars more than $450 though.

You dont want just a pistol grip. Pistol grip + some sort of stock and a good light.

How many shells from a 12ga do you think you'd need? One shot and that SOB is going down for the count. Hell just the sound of a shotgun jacking a round in the dark would have most all criminals pissing their pants.

And you also let whoever is in your house know exactly where you are. If it's a "home defense" shotgun it stays loaded.

This.

And you shouldn't need or want a flashlight on it either for the same reason. It's your house. You can walk around it blindfolded. That guy you're about to kill can't. Don't put a bullseye on yourself.

And I firmly agree with the 870 suggestions. I used to sell guns a zillion years ago as a manager of a big box sporting goods store. That put me right off Mossberg because of how many brand new one's that would come back with serious problems because they were built so shitty. It was astonishing how many. Like one in four. Never once got an 870 back.

I do have a light on mine but if I ever actually needed the gun I wouldnt immediatly flip it on. Would depend on what's going on but I like it being there only because chances are if I ever need the gun it will be in the middle of the night and a light may or may not be needed.

No light on the "night stand" gun but it does stay with a flash light just in case. I cant really work a flash light with a 12 guage in one hand.

No! no one would recommend a .410 for home defense even with a long barrel.

I would go for an 870 with a cylinder choke (unless you have a huge open house) loaded down with 3" 4 buck. If you like the pistol grip, make sure you get one with a grip and a stock, you'll be able to shoot it much better. A light may not be a bad idea, since the tac ones are so damn bright that you will likely blind whoever you aim it at, just don't turn it on unless you're not sure what you're shooting at. Just load it up, and when he comes in, bust his arse. Buckshot is nasty shite.

Perfect example. Woman shot attacker with judge. Attacker ran away.

I recently picked up an H&R home defense shotgun. Looks to be based off the 870 design, its a nice solid gun. Put several boxes thru it this weekend and it did great...and its only 180.00 at Academy. In case you wanted to add some tacitcool items too it and still have money left over.

I have one of these too!! Great gun for the money. Just as good a gun as my 870.

That's not really true. A .410 has about the same muzzle energy as a .357, and if you can shoulder one, slugs, buckshot, or even #4's will do a great job inside the distance of most room dimensions. (i.e. 20ft or less)

Its not the most effective choice, but I think its adequate enough to consider for some.

The Judge? Meh. It wouldn't be my first choice, but I wouldn't feel naked holding one either.

Did you not see the article I posted above? There are many many reasons why people refuse to use that gun for home defense. If it's so similar to a .357 why not just use a .357? You know there are only 3 pellets in a typical #4 .410?

Go with the 870, 18" barrel, synthetic stock, and extended magazine (6+1). $350.

Over time you can add the light and pistol grip stock, and all the other shite.

Buy some 3" #1 Buck or 00Buck and you got a killing sumbitch.
