Home A/C Compressor Replacement Cost

Had a repair man come out to troubleshoot my A/C and determined the Compressor went out/burned up. Compressor is under warranty, so i was told I would only have to pay for labor and to Refill the system with Refrigerant. (this is a 3 ton unit)
Here is the kicker, he want to charge me $950 for the above work. am i getting the shaft on this??? Does Refrigerant cost that much, or is he just screwing me?

that sounds high to me at a first hit, but I am no expert at all. I do know that if your unit uses outdated refrigerant (R-22) it is basically cheaper to replace it than to repair....that may be the case with yours.

Only way the cost is that much is if it's the R-22,if so then you have 2 choices
1. Let him repair it for that price or get another quote for repair.
2. replace entire system and use new coolant, which will cost you around 4k
If it was me i would let them repair it being it's under warranty, and for sure get quotes from some other company's

While he is replacing the compressor have him pull a vacuum on the system, put the required oil in it, and replace the coolant with 407C instead of R22. A drum of R22 is running about $850 while the 407C is around $100 and with the proper oil the 407C is a listed substitute.
Please ignore this, I just saw where it's a 410A system so this doesn't apply

its not, it's R410A. I will take your advice an call around for other quotes. At least request an itemized bill of work to be preformed.

BS, if the compressor is under warranty like he says the manufacturer pays the labor and the replacement cost. You pay the difference in coolant from what he is able to salvage weighed out versus what is needed after swap weighed back in to get desired pressures. Yes any ac guy worth his salt will pull vacuum after the compressor swap. Max price about $475 to $550 for R22 charge if none is salvaged.

Manufacturers warranty. Im going to call them up to see what they say about the labor cost and if it is covered. its a Rheem.

That sounds really high. If the compressor is located in a normal area and not located on a elevated platform or something like that. Time wise this job shouldn't take more than a couple hours.

just got of the phone with another company- and we would charge $660 to $750 as a rough estimate.
Per Rheem warranty- parts only are covered, not the labor

Labor is not included on warranty on ac units,i would love to see your proof of that, so the BS is on you until you do.

That is more reasonable price, what city are you in ? I have a friend that is a Rheem dealer

I had this issue a couple months back. I was quoted the exact same dollar figure. I called my home warranty people and they got it fixed and I only had to pay $60. I was always skeptical about home warranties but that was the best $575 I never paid for (I requested the sellers to add it to the sale, which is pretty normal so I am told).
ETA: I may even pick it up for another year, because I will still come out ahead of the cost for the AC repair and that will give me another year of insurance for future issues.

I replaced my compressor with a Trane last week for 2,750 installed.(had a home warranty so actually free) I'm also told it is illegal to repair an R22 compressor unless its under the manufactures warranty.
