At the camp in MS, we have our deer protein feeders confined inside of large, round pens to keep the hogs out. The deer simply jump over the (32" tall) panels and eat. I now have access to some new ground, and want to set the feeders up similarly inside of a pen, but also want the option of using that pen as a hog trap. Questions: What style trap door is best suited for this scenario? How tall do the panels need to be so that deer can hop in, but trapped hogs can't get out? Is there a better setup for a dual purpose feed pen/hog trap?

Are you wanting this be used as a hog trap and feed pen simultaneously?

That's going to be tough but, I think it can be done.

I would go into it with the understanding that once the hogs get trapped in the pen, the deer are going to be less likely to use/go to the feeder.

Personally, I would make a separate pen if you are serious about catching hogs.

More or less. Probably feed pen during deer season, and then trap now that the season has ended, but it's still cool out. Good excuse to get back into the woods and shoot stuff..

I dont think the deer would go anywhere near the pen if there was a hog trapped inside there.

If you are feeding protein, you have that backwards. You should ideally put it out as soon as the shed their antlers up until they are out of velvet (if you are doing it for the purpose of antler growth).

Like said above, I would just do 2 separate pens.

I've seen it done. but they are tasked different at different times. combo hog trap/feeder pen will be effective as a trap and less effective as a feed pen. I would suggest only using it as a trap once or twice in a year and then running as feed pen rest of the time. So basically build a trap and tie the door open most of the time.

I still like a walk through spring loaded door with vertical hinges. Similar to something you would normally walk through in your home. The link has a picture of it. A guillotine door would work too.

Anything under 48" or anything with corners pigs will climb out of. Deer can easily hop out of 48" but fawns can not. Thus, I build all corral traps round and 20 to 30 ft diameter with 48" high sides.

If you use a guillotine door you could rig it so when door is closed and pen is used as feed pen the space over door is less than 48" high and open. You need 32" tall to keep hogs out of pen but doe and fawns jump that easily. Just make sure that when used as a trap you put a piece of plywood extending to 48" high over the space created when the door closes so the hogs wont get out there.

btw don't worry about putting a free choice protein feeder in a feed pen. just put it outside the pen. hogs cant reach it anyway. use T posts to anchor though.

Don't have to make this one near as big as a deer feed pen. I would use the 50" panels (19.99 at Tractor Supply) JMO

Good luck with the bastards.
Sorry can't get to rotate correctly.

"9" traps work ok for hogs but if you get a real big one it will push the "door" back through the pen.

Also use T posts on trap every 4 to 6 ft max. There is lots of info on trap build in the stickied thread.

The ability to pick up and move a separate trap to the area the hogs are using vs a dual purpose feed pen/trap is an advantage. You want your feed pen in a set spot so you develop patterns. You want to be able to move your trap ideally.

Deer will eat soured corn but not often. They will not eat diesel corn.

In my experience hogs get smart with corrals making this a waste of time. Your idea with putting a pen around your feeders is good. All of my feeders have hog panels around them. However a hog will get trained on them very quickly. You will need to be able to move them around and disguise the trap for long term success. Get a guy to weld traps using that hog panel and rig them up with a gate that drops straight down vertically. Use a pulley and tie a piece of metal barely underneath the gate to a trigger at the back of the pen.
