Help with finding a rifle a 7yr old/little kids can shoot

My oldest son is 7 but he is small for his age. I have been looking at and trying to decide on a serviceable rifle that he may be able to shoot. His older cousin has a Rossi 22/410 combo and the distance from the end of the butt stock to the trigger/grip is a bit too long for my son, so the .243 version of this rifle would also be too long. I thought about the CVA Scout youth rifle in .243 or 7mm-08 and the H&R Handi in .243, but I think they both might be too big as well. I did read something interesting about being able to get a collapsible/tactical butt stock for the handi and maybe with it all the way collapsed he may be able to use that. I'm just not sure what to do at this point. I really want to take him hunting with me this year and would like for him to be able to shoot something if the opportunity presents itself. I have primarily been looking at .243s because I feel the 7mm-08 may be a bit much for him to handle and may scar him and make him gun-shy. Any of you guys have any ideas for me or a solution to my problem?

7mm-08 is a great caliber for those just getting into hunting. CVA youth guns are the way to go imo. Just take him to the store and see what fits him well. But yeah, as far as caliber goes, 7mm-08 is a great caliber that he can use forever.

When my son was 7 he killed his first doe using my old 30-30. Had it tucked under his arm because the stock was too long. I really thought he would miss, but he hit her in the neck and she never moved. I didn't want to get a gun he would out grow and we got him a 308 the next year and he has used it for 10 years.
We hunt mostly from shooting houses and he has a prop so the weight of the gun is not a problem.
Good luck. Taking him is really the most important part at that age.

AR in 300 Blackout.
My 7 y.o. has one- collapse the stock for him now, extend as he gets older. Good gun for dad too.
Make sure to get a good AR mount tall enough to clear a decent scope.

As the father of a 5 year old, I will ask this question: What's the hurry to get him to killing a deer? Why not wait until he is bigger and can handle a rifle without having to modify it down for him?
I think sometimes people get in too big of a hurry for their kids to kill and deer and then the kids don't remember it when they get older.
I don't really remember killing my first squirrel, but I do remember my first deer and every deer thereafter. I don't really want to rob my son of the experience of remembering their first deer.

Had this same problem for my 6 year old, and a buddy told me about his nephew shooting a AR for deer. So I bought my son one and have been very happy. Small, compact, no recoil rifle that he loves to shoot. I put a 3x9 on it and he is consistantly 3.5-5 in groups at 65 yds (as far as ill let him shoot at one). I am thinking about putting a better trigger on it though, little man uses two fingers to pull this one.

AR with collapsible stock is a great platform for kids. Minimal recoil and easy to use.

I found the AR to be great for kids, too, because of the collapsible stock. The .223 is marginal for deer unless they get a good hit, but it's certainly doable. We use Black Hills solid copper ammo (Barnes TSX bullets) .
I found the S&W 15-22 to be an excellent training gun. I put the same red dot on it as I have on one AR. Plenty of rounds downrange in .22 LR while the young'uns are learning trigger control. Transition to the AR was simple (same stock and same trigger).
I went with the Geiselle triggers (fairly expensive, but hey -- kids are worth it -- right).
(They're also easy to install).
I found the S&W 15-22 to be an excellent training gun. I put the same red dot on it as I have on one AR. Plenty of rounds downrange in .22 LR while the young'uns are learning trigger control. Transition to the AR was simple (same stock and same trigger).

Killed my first deer at 6 with a 6.5x55 swede. Best caliber out there for kids IMO, unfortunately not available in much of anything youth sized.
I suggest a rem 700 in 7mm-08. Take the full sized stock off and put a youth stock on it. When he gets old enough, put the full sized one back on. Keep the youth stock for his kids. You can buy him one rifle right now that he can easily use for the rest of his life for up to elk sized stuff if he so chooses.
For the love of all things outdoors, don't get a .243

I bought the CVA youth hunter in 243 for my 9 year old niece to hunt with. If she can handle the gun, you son should be able with no problem. Take a Look at Academy,they have a CVA hunter with a scope for around $250.

My son is 6 he has an AR BB gun, but he also likes to shoot my 6.8 - he is big and heavy for his age (110lbs) but has short arms the AR platform is the only thing he looks comfortable shooting until his arms catch up

I bought a TC encore with a .17 hmr barrel. My daughter shot it a lot getting used to shooting a rifle with a scope. I ordered a Bargara (sp? ) 7mm-08 barrel with a muzzle break to put on the gun when we go deer hunting. I also bought a wooden "bantam" stock and cut about an inch off it. It's a pretty sweet setup.

My son shot his first deer at age 7 with my old 30.30. The next year I bought 7mm08 and he has killed 4 additional deer and a huge hog. This is the best deer caliber, great balistics and little recoil. My boy is 11 now and dropped a doe at 225 yards last week. He does use a rest or sticks depending on what we are hunting out of. One other note is I put a Trijicon scope on the rife, great scopes with quick target acquisition due to the dot.
