I recently got a Walther PPS M2 and I really like it. Out of the box I shoot it better than the Shield I had. Breaks ur $400 threshold by a little but then again...ur a lawyer...and it is only ur life that needs protecting so...

I looked and looked for a good carry pistol for a long time. I personally carry a S&W Shield 9MM in a crossbreed supertuck inside the waist holster. Very comfortable and I can still tuck my shirt in for work.

My wife carries a Ruger LC9 also with a crossbreed minituck. She is 5 months pregnant and still doesnt have any problem carrying the gun throughout the workday.

My 62 year old mother carries a Walther P380 in a crossbreed supertuck holster all day.

As it has been said, the gun is one thing, the holster is where the comfort comes into play. All of these pistols have safeties on them. My wife and mother have practiced with taking their safeties off at the range. I personally dont use the safety and I move around all day. I'm in sales so I am in and out of my truck all day long with it and never feel it anymore.

Also check out Aliengear holsters. I have one for my XDS and it's very comfortable. Also try it at different positions.

1. You've been given a lot good advice -- mainly to get a 9mm and carry it in a manner that allows a one-handed draw.

2. Bodyguard is one of the few pistols that has a worse trigger than the LCP. But the real answer is to quit thinking about .380's.

3 The best advice you've been given is to find a GOOD instructor and learn how st shoot.

p.s. Don't buy a Taurus (irrespective of what might be suggested). You might get one that's reliable More likely -- you'll get one that's defective. Same for Kel-Tec.

eta: You really limit your options with $400 budget. That's a lot me looking for a lawyer that only charges $15 an hour.

If you are looking for a reasonable caliber that you can carry without bulky clothing on... a .380 is a good choice. You hear people knocking them but a lot of police officers carry a .380 as a backup. You might want to look at a Diamond Back .380.

Gun is pretty small. You can cover it with a hand and it will not be seen. Only about 3/4" thick and weighs just under 9 ounces. Has a clip that holds 6+1. Double action... NO visible hammer and no safety. Can only go off by pulling the trigger. Really is a self defense gun. You can shoot it from inside a jacket pocket and there is no hammer to catch.

I have a variety of semi autos that are larger caliber and capacity but you can't beat this if you want to carry completely concealed and don't have the option of wearing a bigger jacket or dressing a bit sloppy to hide a gun. Put this in a suit pocket or breast pocket and it does not imprint.

Diamondbacks will have too many failures. Walther PPS M2 or Glock 43. Both very similar and decent triggers and great reliability. If you don't like those, get a Smith 442 or 662 but those are tough trigger pulls and not fun to shoot at all and only 5 rounds.

Diamondbacks have to be broken in. I think the manufacturer recommends 50 rounds. We did have a misfire around the 3rd reload. We cycled about 200 rounds through it and it has never misfired since. Gun is about 3-4 years old now and we have probably put another 100 rounds or so through it over the last 3 years without a misfire.

Personally I carry a 9mm with me in my truck.

You said you plan to take a CC class. Some folks have wisely suggested getting a good trainer for instruction.

Some think a CC class suffices for training. Typically, it will not. The CC classes often consist of classroom time re the law, with very minimal actual shooting at short range, and almost no shooting technique instruction.

They're about like a drivers ed class where you sit in a class all day and then drive the length of a driveway.

Thats an awfully short barrel to get reliable expansion from a .45...in small single stack pistols I dont see the need for a .45 other than continuity of caliber if you already had a .45

I have a S&W Shield 9mm in a remora holster. Should be right up your alley.

Not a good option if he plans to reholster often. I love my remora for quick trips to the store but it's definitely a two hand job to get it back in the holster once drawn. I have a Hidden Hybrid holster for my Shield as my EDC.

That's some real good advice. Let me expand a bit for the OP. A CCW class is really to ensure you know the law and can demonstrate you can safely handle a gun. They are not fightning classes. Good news is those classes are offered by many fantastic instructors here in Louisiana and also quite a few world renowned firearm instructors travel here and offer classes.

Do spend time learning what is covered in those classes. MAGPUL Dynamics has a tactical handgun dvd that has been out forever and is a great DVD to understand what those classes entail. The presentation and demonstration is very well done and I highly recommend it. I also recommend looking at some of Panteo production videos that have Paul Howe, Travis Haley and many other famous instructors. YouTube has quite a few clips of those videos so you can view for free. Check out Kyle Lamb and Larry Vickers.

It may not sound sexy and many new gun owners can be hard headed but there is no better way to spend money than on training. I use to be heavy into shooting and training and the number of times I use to see people who thought they knew how to shoot and handle a gun only to see them make every mistake in the book. Some I believe invented several new ones. Those people tended to be handgun owners who bought a gun for protection. Owning and carrying does not equal competency so do get some real training. It's fun and it may one day save your life.

Has anyone noticed how long we went in this thread without a Glock G19 recommendation?
