i'm thinking of buying a boat but it has a force on it. i've never heard anything good about these. the price is pretty cheap for the entire unit but, i'm a little worried about the motor. it's a 97 and the reed valve has just been changed. thoughts?

I've never heard of them but I can tell you one thing. It sounds like you know better but are trying to talk yourself into buying it even though your conscious is telling you the best thing is to walk.
I'll never risk the happiness of a big purchase being tarnised by mechanical break downs. Sure you can get unlucky and get lemons with anything but in this case it seems like you have enough info to raise red flags.
Just my .02. Free advice is worth what it costs.

Had a 120 force on a 19 ft trophy, 96 model if i remember. Sucker ran like a champ. I hot it used in 2000. Ran like a top. Never left me stranded and it was only used in saltwatet. Regular maintenance, never had trouble. I know they have a bad rep, but mine was perfect. I ran it for 6 years before i upgraded boat.

They are junk. Run away.

I have a 70 Force on my 96 Tracker. It sucks, but in its defense, I put it through hell. It ran well until I burned it up.
Chrysler Outboard was bought by Merc and created Force outboards for a couple years until they canned them.

so, are parts ready available or are they interchanbable with merc parts?

Yes, they are still available. One of my battery wires burned through and crossed and burnt up all my electronics.
Got all that fixed and next time I went out I sucked up a bag and burned the engine up (alarm was fried from prior incident).
Got it rebuilt and next time out my prop and all the gears from my lower unit shot out.
Had to replace starter twice and for some stupid arse reason they're like $350.

Rebuilt parts seem readily available. Rebilt powerhead is a couple grand (4 cyl) and lower units about $1500. New starter about $80.

My dad bought his boat brand new in 97 and it had a force on it. He fishes A LOT and there's no tellin how many hours he put on it, and he never really had any trouble with it until last year. It threw a rod while we were runnin in to our camp. He had it rebuilt and I bought it from him and he got a new boat. I've had no complaints on it so far.

Force is essentially an old Chrysler.
they are not bad engines if maintained.

My dad has a 120 force and hasn't had a minutes problem. I think it's a 97. They are made by merc so they can't be THAT bad.

Force was first built by Chrysler. When Chrysler shut down, Mercury picked the production of Force for several years to try and build a cheap priced consumer outboard. There are still many of em running today. I've seen some run great for years and some that would not run right no matter what you did to it. My opinion, I'm not a Force fan at all. To each his own.

We have access to an 18 ft Bayliner with a Force 120 that's probably about a 95/96 model. It belongs to my cousin and is on Lake Pickwick (MS/AL/TN). We don't own the boat, but in all the summers that we've been up there it's been a reliable motor.
Had to replace the battery once, and another time clean the fuel filter when we ran it out of gas and it sucked up something from in the tank, but other than that it never gave us any problems. Haven't been up there in a few years now but it seemed decent enough to me. Occasionally it took some effort to get it started but that's because the boat wasn't used very often.

We had a 150 force... On one of our boats in the early 90's... I think it was a 93... It didn't make it 4 years without major issues... We replaced it in 97
As they say let the force be with someone else...

The joke with force outboards is that they got their name because they are built by taking some off spec merc parts and forcing them together.
It definitely would not be my choice, but I wouldn't rule out a used boat just because it has a force hanging on the back.

I didn't know forces came with a cowling.
I've never seen one with the cowling on the motor
