I am curious also. My On X app has offline maps. I have found that the screen is hard to see in sunlight.

I use Gaia app. If you save the maps before you get out of service, the gps and map stay referenced very well. They have national forest maps, aerials, topos, and all kinds of backgrounds. It’s worth the money.

Interesting. I was wondering about google maps specifically because I have all my pins saves already and won't lose anything.

I use Map Plus. Free, easy to use, and you can store all your .kmz files in it

I have used the Maps.ME app in a lot of foreign cities when I did not have cell service. You pick the area that you want to download ahead of time. It works great for that, but never tried it outside of a city area.

can you do a test run by downloading like your neighborhood and throw a few pins here n there? Turn your data/wifi off and just leave gps on.

I've successfully used the download feature but only for road trips.

Used the offline feature for camping. I don't believe it gave me a location marker where I was, but you could see the satellite view if you knew where you were.
