Hardhead catfish, LSU says they are good to eat but would you?

LSU Sea Grant Hardhead info

they had this to say about them:
Food Value:
Seldom eaten, but it is very good table fare, better than the gafftopsail catfish.

I have eaten my fair share of gaftops but never once thought about loading the cooler with turd hustlers. Just a random thoughts kind of day what does the OB think about this claim?

Has to be a joke or mistake.

Wait a minute...I've never actually tried them.

I say no. Gaftop....mehh, but I know plenty of people that eat them. I'd rather save my knife skills for something worth a shite.

No to both, gafftops have to be the nastiest fish in the water. Can never get the slime off the line when you catch one.

I saw that on there. I wouldn't mess with them. Bayou, sounds like you would eat anything.

I like what they have under Bonefish:

"Food Quality: None, although they are eaten in some countries. They are very boney."

You don't say!

Got me there. I will try damn near anything food related at least once. It always makes my 3yr old mad that I throw his fish back. Might have to fry up a couple

I have that book and have seen this a while back.... I think gafftops are gross... But I seldom eat catfish in general. Just not a big fan when I have better stuff in the freezer. With that said, hard heads get the flipper everytime

I fileted a hardhead once out of curiosity and the meat looks okay but there's not much of it. Those sumbiches are all head! It's not worth the risk of getting poked or clean-up of coolers to deal with them.

you dont eat the slime.....

they arent bad.
there really shouldnt be fish snobs in Louisiana, but we have more than our share.

if you know how to clean fish and you can cook worth a damn then you should eat just about any damn thing.

It shouldnt be specks or bust, but I'll be happy to take what some of have too much "pride" to keep!

I fish for fun, the meat's just a bonus. I usually have enough in the freezer, so I don't feel like keeping cats that are a PITA to clean.

i hear ya...not a big deal.

I eat fish a few times a week, so the supply stays up with all sorts of species.
I live on a fresh water lake and I fish saltwater more than that, so I tend to have a variety on hand.

I filet catfish just like i would any other fish, so its not anymore difficult than any other species to clean. At least I dont think so.

now Sheephead...different story, but i swear that's in my top 3 meat fish. Absolutely delicious, but that rib cage takes practice.

Not from LA.

It's not, I am just as happy eating a ground mullet (southern kingfish) or white trout.

Oh, thanks for the memo on not eathing the slime, I have heard you can get high off it.

If you can catch some hardheads on the way offshore, snip off the fins, toss them freeline at any lemonfish you see, lemonfish love them.

I actually tried them myself one time. Cleaned a couple rather large hardheads, fried them with a bunch of spec, and made everybody at the camp try them. They all agreed that there was nothing at all wrong with the hardheads.

That said, I do not plan to do it again. Hardheads are just too nasty to deal with and clean.
