re: handi rifle
I bought a .45-70 the day Jindal signed the bill. Only thing they had.

Have heard that the .35 was best, but for hunting maybe once or twice a year with it, it's not worth switching.

re: handi rifle
You'll get most votes for 35...

So I'll vote .444

re: handi rifle
.35 whelen completely smokes the other two on raw ballistics.

Inside of 100 yards all three of them are fantastic. .444 and .45/70 are both close range calibers unless you want to get good at rainbow shots.

re: handi rifle
I have the 444 but the 35 will out shoot it
Killed an 8 pt. this year at 220 yards with the 444
Killed a yote at 190 yards.
We done alot of shooting at long ranges with the 444 & 35 & the 35 stays flatter further.

re: handi rifle
I'm sure a box of corelocks is about the same for all three calibers.

re: handi rifle
I got the 444 and dropped everything I've shot with it. Shots were 100 to 115 yards tops

44 Mag is the cheapest H&R ammo for whitetail, it just doesn't have the range if you hunt fields. It is a good no-recoil, woods round, IMO.

re: handi rifle
I have the 45/70. As others have said the .35 is the better cartridge.

44 mag is not a handi rifle

re: handi rifle
I will say this about the .45-70. If you put a hole in the deer with it, you don't have to worry about a long track to find him.

I think the H&R comes in 44mag, and most other calibers

It's not considered a primitive weapon.
The 44 mag is not the same as a 444

It is a primitive weapon in MS where I hunt. It only has to be over .35 caliber and in the right type of single shot rifle. (Even the 357 mag qualifies, but I think that's kinda light.) I never checked if it qualifies in LA because I only fish here.
