I have joined a new hunting lease, and I will need a GPS to mark many boundaries, stands, etc. Have not had a need for one till now, as my previous lease was square, with 2 cut across roads, thus very easy to navigate. Is there a very big difference between Garmin and Magellan? Got my eye on a midrange Garmin. Oh, and first post, been lurking for years, so I know what to expect..

I used them rarely, but when I did, I used a Garmin GPS Map one. No problems other than the initial time it took to learn the thing

Save your money, use google maps. If you have to chart property lines and advanced stuff, you can download GPS Apps for like 20 bucks. Come to think of it, as long as you have a view of the sky, you dont need cell service. I use my smartphones in the middle of the Tensas Refuge, and mark all my deerstands with pins.

Thanks for the advice Nico, but as an old fart, I don't have a smartphone, only a suckberry And this new lease has about 40 boundaries to learn, plus with a 300 yard rule between stands, I really need one!

I have never used one like the one you posted. I always used one like the 62 series that had rubber/hard plastic exterior. That 76 looks like it would shatter if you dropped it in the wrong spot

I know what you mean Hammer, but the more durable looking ones I find all have a B/W screen. And thanks for the advice also

I have had the 76CSX similar to the one you posted. It's more of a marine unit as it will float if you drop it in the water. Iris very rugged/durable as I've haven't been kind to mine.

It isn't hard to get used to it so the learning curve isn't bad.

The 60 series is more geared to hiking as its smaller and it doesn't float. The software is the same.

ETA: welcome aboard. It's a pretty good group of guys here.

I would have been disapointed if I hadn't gotten a response like this!

I have been looking at magellan explorers on amazon.com. they seem pretty good for a good price.

Unless you have a backup plan to get yourself out of wherever, a cheap GPS is not the way to go. A good bit of them aren't as accurate as they should be, some not even locking on in thick cover. They can also burn through batteries quickly or just flat out break and then you are up shite's creek

I always have at least a map and compass with me. I rarely(maybe 3-5% of the time) use a GPS. Old school is the way to go

I have one of these I used once...still looks brand new. I'd sell it for $175.
I never use it.

I have a Garmin Map 76S. Waterproof and it floats. Got all my Big Lake spots on it. Have dropped it from the treestand on multiple occaisions and it works great. I'm not impressing with the maps on it though, and I can get aerial photos on my iPhone.

Maybe the OP should consider buying used on eBay. I got the Map 76 for $150 a few years ago, then bought the USGS Topo maps to download on it for about $100.

Garmin>Magellan IMO
I've never owned a Garmin but have had two Magellan and there are more aftermarket maps and what not formatted for Garmin than Magellan. The only charts and maps I could find were from Magellan and were pretty sucky when compared to Navionics.

big fan of the Garmin 76Cx line, and they've come down big time in price over the last 5 years. A little on the bulkier side but they float and are easy to see and operate.
