I am ready to purchase my first handgun and looking for recommendations around or below $600. I would like to use it for home protection and to carry in my truck. Should I get a 9mm vs. .40 caliber?

I'm looking for one as well. I'd like something like this. Do you guys recommended a 4" or 6" barrel?

I was actually looking at this model before posting. 3.8" or 4.5"? Can the 3.8" eventually be used as a conceal carry?

Glocks work goodone, can't go wrong. Also if you shop you can find HK VP9 for about 600.

You will get many different recommendations for model and manufacturer but whatever handgun you go with I would recommend 9mm. You lose a slight bit of power but this is negligible if you use good defense ammo. But more importantly 9mm gives you greater ammo capacity and less recoil. I used to own several .40 cal handguns and now I have all 9mm.

First, since the proposed gun is going to be a truck/home gun, there's NO reason to get a compact, semi-compact or ultra-light gun; get a full size handgun in 9mm, 40 S&W, 357 Mag, 357 Sig or 45 ACP. For me, I'd get a 9mm over the 40. Full size guns are generally easier to shoot for a number of reasons. When you're ready for a cc gun, get one. In the meantime, this gun should not be bought to maybe someday also fulfill the role of concealed carry. Full size (not "airweight or lightweight") revolvers are fine, but they're not foolproof and have limited round capacity compared to the modern semi-auto.. Most folks would get a double stack magazine semi-auto (e.g a Model 17 Glock, S&W M&P, Springfield Armory XD/XDM and MANY other models). Personally, I'd get a double action only or a striker fired gun. The single action/double action semi-auto (like the Beretta Model 92) is very good also, but I personally prefer the simplicity of either DAO or SAO. Of course, for someone willing to learn it's manual of arms, a reliable 1911 is always a good choice. There's lots of good self defense ammo available. One way to simplify the choice is to consider using whatever handgun ammo your local LEO's use. Put a premium on getting a 100% RELIABLE gun from a reputable gun maker, i.e. Ruger, S&W, Beretta, Sig, Springfield Armory, Walther etc. This is NOT where you want to save money, especially for a handgun newbie.
.
Since this is your first handgun, I'd consider getting some formal training, as well.

Keep us updated w/ your choice.

Slidell Gun show had a HUGE selection and some pretty good prices. I thought gun shows jacked the prices way up from what I heard.

6 shots of 357 mag or 17 shots of 9mm. You need to make that decision before buying

4" if it's for self defense from people, 6" if it's for hunting or self defense from 4 legged stuff.

4" is pretty much the ideal length for a .357 revolver. It just feels right. The 6's are nose heavy and just plain huge.

357 mag doesn't provide that much different wound than a 9 mm.

9 mm with more rounds fired at a faster rate for the win.

For the money consider the FNS or FNX. You get a tac rail, a reliable weapon, night sights and a hard carry case all standard for $589. Gun has a comfortable feel, 17 round mags and you get 3 of them.
