Handgun for Coon Hunting
Posted by DownshiftAndFloorIt on 5/8/15 at 10:49 pm00
Currently using a Ruger 22/45 with 5" barrel and high velocity hollow points
This thing just doesn't have enough arse for killing coons when not hit in the head at the top of the tree. I'm not toting a long rifle though the woods at night and I need something with more umph. I hit a coon 4 times tonight and it still walked all the way down the tree. This happens alot unless I screw up and hit it in the face.
Obviously the only answer is new gun. I'm looking at a single six hunter with 7.5" barrel. I'm thinking the extra length will give me some more horsepower without the noise of a .22 mag
Or should I just get a 6.5" .22 mag single six?
Or should I start shooting them with my .357?
Or is there a better option out there?

Would not advise doing that.
And why can't you tote a little .22 rifle around in the woods?

I highly recommend a pair of Kinber Pro Coverts.

Because I already bring too much shite.
Dog rope, squaller, pistol, boolits, Copenhagen, garmin, one beer in every pocket, phone, compass. Beer in one hand, stick in other, and Walmart bag to tote a coon back
to the boat.
I ain't bringing something other than a pistol. Think I'm gonna buy a ruger single 9

Get a single six. Comes with two cylinders.
.22lr and .22 mag
.22lr and .22 mag

Do I want a single six or a single nine though?
Or maybe a smith? Or some long barreled auto .22 mag?
Or a .17?

I have single six and love the two cylinders.
Or a heritage rough rider. Two cylinders as well.

Are you hunting or partying?
Get a rifle, it will be harder to Darwin yourself that way.

I Use the gun you have listed in OP

Ruger and S&W both make .17 hmr revolvers. I would go with one of those.

How loud are they?
If I'm going to deal with deafening muzzle blast I might as well whatever the biggest nastiest rim fire they make is

Use plugs or get a supressor. The noise is unpleasent.

Well since you have a phone you could ditch the compass.

You already know the answer to your own question.
You know you want a single six, and your a working man now.
Treat yourself to a fine gun, slip some mags in there and put them coons down.

Yea I know. I'm getting a single six convertible 6.5"
I think .22 mag is the answer here. Looks like a .22 mag out of a 6.5" revolver is a hair spicier than a .22lr out of a long gun.
.22lr kills the hell out of them out of a long gun but out of that 5" pistol it sucks past about 20 yards.
