Just bought a .40 and a 9mm. What's some good reliable ammo to use. Looking for target rounds to put thru it. I have been told to avoid using aluminum. Any help would be awesome.

Right now, any that you can find.
I like federal hydroshocks and keep them in most of my guns.

When you can find it, the Winchester white box that Walmart has is about the cheapest and it's dependable.

Absolutely avoid aluminum, it swells WAY too much.

Federal American Eagle is what I use at the range. 20 bucks a box. Never had an issue.

If Walmart doesn't have any, I ordered some from Natchez Shooters Supply yesterday. They didn't have any 9, but they had 40 and 45

I'd shoot it. Just wouldn't make it a habit.

Ammo sales are final at all places I've ever bought it. No returns.

Well I learned the hard way. O well.

Get in the practice of checking WalMart every time you go.
Going for a gallon of milk? Check for bullets. See what you want...buy a box or three.
Getting the oil changed? Bullets
And so on. Training the wife atm too.
Overtime, you will accumulate quite a stockpile of ammo. Makes it very easy to target shoot and practice when you want to.

I bought the wrong hunting ammo by mistake at Jim's once. They took it back the next day but wouldn't refund me. Just gave me a store credit

Are you a woman? Are you European? jk
Handgun ammo hasn't gotten stupid like the rifle stuff. Is see it on the shelf in plenty of places. For plinking, any cheap brand is fine. Even steel case.
For personal defense, Hydrashok is fine. I like heavy bullets on .40, but that's just me.
Remington Gold Dot is VERY underrated. So much so it's hard to find on the shelf. Hornady TAP FPD is good stuff too.

Same.
I prefer shooting the 180gr rounds over the others.
As far as target loads there are many but just a few would be:
Winchester White box
Remington UMC
Federal American Eagle
Independence
Blazer Brass
PMC
