Well this was a good weekend for me down here. Headed up to the camp at noon on Friday and was in the stand by 4:00 that evening. The wind was HOWLING! I knew it was unlikely to see anything but it was good to be out there.

Saturday morning I saw 2 doe and 2 yearlings come running through as if something was chasing them. I assume it had to be a coyote because our rut doesn't happen until late December - early January.

Saturday afternoon I sat on this plot:

wind was still blowing but was supposed to slack off. It did so around 5:45. At 6:15 (sunset) I see a deer walk out of the pines in that tiny gap where my pins are pointing in the picture above. I just can't believe it. I've seen so many deer this season but haven't gotten a shot on many. She walks off. I'm upset. Then all of a sudden I see her again; she turned around! She fed towards me and I finally got the shot when she was in the smaller gap to the right between the little pines.

Now I'll be honest, I am not proud of the shot, but it got the job done. The 2 3/8" cut of the rage xtreme may have bailed me out on this one. She ran 30yds max. I must have severed the main artery that services the liver. My mistake was not stopping her because she was unaware of my presence. She must have taken a step as I shot causing the shot to be back. But I'm thankful I made a clean kill. I heard he crash within 5 seconds of the shot.

And now for the trip I have been waiting for! Saturday morning around 2am my dad and I are hitting the road for Illinois! We are going to be hunting public land for a week. This is our first trip up so if yall have any tips and pointers they would be greatly appreciated.

Congrads!

Well, I had a really good opening weekend. I killed the buck that I had targeted. Kinda disappointing though, because he turned out to be younger than I thought. I'm very happy with him though.

At 8:00 I had poured myself a cup of coffee because it was pretty chilly on the tripod. Two yearlings came out and crossed the field when I saw him come out of the bedding area. He went back into the brush and then came out again about 50 yards away and checked a scrape. Then he turned on a dime and ran straight at the tripod, got to about 10 yards and busted me.

He ran off about 30 yards and I hit him in the front shoulder. He ran to the creek and fell in. After dragging him up a very steep bank I got a solid look at him and was very happy. Great weekend

Nice buck man.

I didn't get down to the ranch this weekend but my dad did. One of his guests (mail order) wife shot this one on our low fenced place. 11 pt but only looks about 3.5, maybe 4.5. Still a pretty good buck for outside the fence.

What did he score?

I'll text the guy and see if they have scored him. I would guess high 140s, low 150s. Hard to tell without putting my hands on him.

Yeah I hear ya. There was definitely some ground shrinkage for me. When I saw him I though he was 30 inches wide.

Heart was in my ears

I'm guessing low-mid 140s on that buck, Miller

didn't want to start a thread so i'm going to briefly hi-jack this one.

In MS. Are rifles legal during ALL primitive seasons on private land? Or just any primitive season after November 30th on private land?

He carries his height pretty well throughout and has 11 scorable points, but you're probably right. If the guy texts me back with a score I'll post it.

If it was, he must have gotten the memo not to run within 50 yds of a bow stand occupied by Hat

Sounds like a great weekend and good luck in Illinois. Buddy of mine and his dad go and they have a great time and see some quality deer.

Look forward to your IST reports from up north. Safe travels

Damn hat, you could throw a Gillette razor out of the stand and an animal would hit the ground.

No. You can use any rifle AFTER the rifle season opens. This first primitive weapon season is the same rules as before (smoke pole, 45/70, 35whelen, etc..)

Great weekend for me. Played my part in helping my cousin fill a third of his management doe tags. Between 3 of us we took 4 doe and 1 spike, I shot 3 total. Ended up with 130lbs of meat total de-boned. No misses, no wounded deer and no Saints or LSU losses.

Grats!
I made a quick fishing trip Sunday morning, 8-11. Caught a lot of dinks, only 4 keeper bass though. Not bad for a post front trip, but damn it was cold on the water.

Nice. I was stuck at home on account of Halloween and ole lady's work. I killed 27 doves around the house between Sat-Sun. 1 was a white wing.
