We've had 2 born in the last 3 days.

First one is a little bull, soon to be a steer.

The other was born yesterday, and it's a little heifer.

We've had 9 calves so far this year. This is the sire of all of our 2015 calves...

Why did you use him instead of that prize bull you bought last year?

Can not wait to get some cattle, still going to be some time before that happens but prices have to come down anyway.

He was the bull I used between 2012-2014. These are his last few calves as the gestation period is very similar to a human(9 months).

I bought the new bull in February, so anything born after Thanksgiving will be his going forward.

It's actually a really exciting time as the fruits of the transition are right around the corner.

The price has been sliding a little actually. It's like anything else, the price ran up and people over paid. It's starting to settle at new "normal" levels.

I don't think the guy is going to take my puppy name suggestion from the other day. This may have to be little Leonard Fourleggs himself.

prices of commodities is inverse the price of the dollar.

dollar gets stronger commodity prices fall. All commodities are $ denominated.

There is a little more to that like supply/demand but still pretty consistent.

They flurry in the spring and fall, but yeah, we run a bull with our cows all year long.

Pulling your bull to sync your cow's heat cycles is a good idea if you are running a large operation and want uniform aged calves. For us, it's just not worth it as we've had cows miss breeding because we pulled the bull and not calve for like a 20 month or longer interval.

Wait, you actually have calves born in the summer/fall? Ours would always calf in the coldest, rainiest day in the winter.

There is always a couple.

Our winters are not harsh by any measure when you consider Wyoming and the Dakota's are also cattle country. As long as they have minerals, hay daily and feed every few days it's no problem. The key is the calf getting up and nursing the colostrum the first day. If they do that, they'll make it just fine even during a hard freeze.

You need to pull your bull and ween your calves earlier this will cause them to wait to breed. I won't on some but I have seen it occur.
