Should have at least one or two classic US military rifles: M1903, M1 Garand, M14 (M1A), or M1 Carbine. One no frills 20" AR-15 before getting a shorter barrel variant you can geardo up to you heart's content (just don't post a pic of it). A lever-action rifle should be in the collection anything from an inexpensive Marlin 336W 30-30 to something nicer in 45-70 and even both if you have room. A good basic bolt-action in 30-06 or 308 topped with a solid scope. A good semi-auto 12ga (A400 or thereabouts) and a good O/U 12ga or 20ga. Handguns? A no frills 1911, a 4" .357 Mag, a true fullsize 9mm, a target-type .22lr plinker, and something exotic in the hand-cannon class. I filled mine based on what I thought I would enjoy shooting and didn't see every single time I went to the range.

My take as must-haves:

Handguns-
a 1911 in USGI configuration, 45 acp, 5" slide.
a fullsize 9mm doublestack that can feed HPs reliably, it can be a DA/SA like Beretta 92, or a polymer striker fire like Glock.
A classic revolver in either 357 or 38 Special, either S&W or Colt.
A pair of .22's: a reliable semiauto (Ruger or Browning) that will feed most ammo, and a revolver that will feed all.

Long guns:
A lever action rifle in 30-30.
A bolt action in a WW2 caliber (30.06, 8mm Mauser, etc).
Something in 7.62 x 39 (SKS, Mini-30, AK), or 223/556 (AR).
22 semiauto.
22 bolt action.
12 gauge pump or semiauto.

You can expand from this, but I'd say these are the essential ones to start with.

A crack barrel 410
A pump 12 gauge
Either a lever action 22 rifle or a semi auto
A bolt action rifle in 30-06, 270, 308 or similar
Either a Winchester or Marlin 30-30
A 38 or 357 revolver preferably a smith
A 22 pistol of any sort

If this was all you have, you have the basics covered. The rest is lagniappe.

I like this list the most, this is what I would recommend for a starter collection.

Pump 12 Gage, home protection, skeet shooting, can hunt anything from squirrels to deer
Semi Auto 22, good for target practice and introduction to rifles and semi auto guns
357 Revolver, good dependable gun for home protection, iconic American gun
AR 15 SHTF gun, home defense, plinking, recreational use
Semi auto pistol, home/self defense EDC
Large caliber deer rifle (.243 on up), long distance/big game hunting

1911
Polymer 9mm
12 gauge
AR15

That's really everything they SHOULD have.

Then bolt action rifle, .22 rifle and pistol, and a revolver.

Must have:

Full frame 9mm pistol
12ga shotgun
hunting caliber bolt action
assault rifle
22lr rifle

Gives you 5 calibers and you should stack ammo deep for. Minimum on hand should be:

9mm 500
12ga 500 in various shots
Hunting: 100 in your prefered hunting load
Assault rifle 1k
22lr 2k

Now you get to the should have because they are fun to shoot.

-WWII milsurp rifle. Love the feel of shooting those old war relics.
-Magnum caliber revolver. Everyone should have a hand cannon. Fun to blow big holes in stuff.
-Lever action rifle. I love a good 357 lever action. But a 30-30 makes a good brush gun you could hunt with too.
-22LR revolver. Great to have around because you can shoot any and every type of 22 ammo made from it. Shorts. Primer only CBs and Colibris. Shot shells. etc.
