Fellow Outdoor Boarders -- wife and i just bought a new home. She recently also bought me a 20-gun gun safe for my birthday. As the house was being built, we were told the laundry room would be a certain size (comparable to the model home). Unfortunately, circumstances changed and the laundry ended up smaller than expected. This is only important because I was planning to put the safe in the laundry but now don't have room.

So, I need help determining where to put it. The garage is an option, but I'm concerned about temperature and humidity (this is in Houston). It has two bedrooms above it and faces south, if that matters.

I could also put it in one of the extra rooms upstairs. However, it weighs 400+ pounds, so I'm concerned about that option.

Lastly, I could put it in the study on the first floor. The problem with that is the wife doesn't want this option as it would be a bit of an eye sore. I'm also not sure how the safe would affect the hard wood floors, if at all.

Anyway, would love to hear you guys' thoughts. Anyone else gone the garage route?

I've known friends who put theirs in the garage. As long as you have a decent dehumidifier and it's out of the elements I'm pretty sure it'll be ok.

I have mine in the study/office. Try to find a good place for it so that it fits in the the flow of the from and tell your wife to get over it. It's either that or it could go in the master bedroom.

A real danger is that a passerby sees the safe while the garage door is open.

closet in your master bedroom

I would go with the study though. Any study without a gun safe is not really a good study anyway. It is a good looking addition to an office/study.

Funny you mention this. I threw out the master bedroom closet as an alternative, and it was quickly destroyed by the lady. Can't really argue since she gave me the safe.

Light bulbs used to be the go to. The dehumidifiers are great nowadays though.

They look good in this set up in my opinion. Just tell the wife you claim decorative carte blanche in this one room and she can have the rest of the house. Then you end up with cool looking office with a desk, wildlife art, a couple of mounts and of course the safe and gun collection.

That, or get a new wife would be another option.

Put it in the study. She will get over it. If it is a study or office she will never enter anyway. It is your house too

My father in law did this with his. Made it a study/outdoors/trophy room. We painted it a dark green and have a bunch of natural wood furniture with his mounts on the walls. Looks badass

You married to my wife?

Nevermind. Mine would never have bought me a 20 gun safe in the first place.

As long as it is not in the kitchen or the bedroom, should it ever really be in her way?

When we were first married, I put the safe in our bedroom closet. She hated it, especially since it meant she could fit all her fricking clothes in there.

After that, convincing her to put it in the office was no problem.

put it in a corner and anchor it to the floor, the corner will help prevent it from being tipped over by thieves if it is anchored
