It's maddening, I think I have bought 6 guns in the past two years or so, help up 3 times and walked 3 times.

Why don't these idiots know my social security number by now and that I am good to go?

Do you have a TWIC? Carson swears twics will cause delays but I've had a TWIC for 5 years. I was never delayed before and never after.

I think it has more to do with your name being similar to someone else that has a shady record if you will. My father and I are the only two in the United States with our name.

You mention your social, if you out that down on the form and you still get delayed you have a shady record.

I've bought just as many and each time has been a smooth effortless transaction

They did 44 million background from beginning of 2014 to end of 2015, forgive them for forgetting who you were after 6 checks.

Get a UPIN or a concealed carry permit, problem solved.

I have heard this too. I haven't bought a gun in years, but IIRC, it's a question on the app

My dad and I have the same name as some wanted Mexican dude. I tried getting a Western Union once, and couldn't. He'd always get held up buying guns, but I wouldn't. He eventually went to the feds to clear his name. Everything since has been smooth for him

The 4473 does not ask if you have a TWIC card.

Maybe it was the CCW app. I remember seeing it somewhere

I bought a pistol a couple of months ago. It was the first gun I've ever purchased. I had no problems. I don't think 10 minutes passed from the time the guy took my completed form until they said I was good to go.

I had an old H&R Topper Jr. 20 gauge, a Remington 870 Wingmaster 12 gauge and a Belgian Browning 12 gauge that were all gifts. Because I don't hunt anymore, I recently gave all of them to my nephews.

ETA:
Are there any future problems that could result in my nephews having guns that my dad and my grandfather bought 40 or 50 years ago?

correlation does not equal causation, but there is a very strong correlation. we always ask delayed people if they have TWICs, and they almost always say "yes." It's not a 100% thing in any way, though, and wed have to poll all the Proceeds if they have a TWIC for an accurate study, but nobody remembers. the ATF agent we spoke to said that because you're fingerprinted for a TWIC, the initial check flags the fingerprint and can't see why you were fingerprinted. examiner from one level up has to verify that it is for a clearance. it's weird and frustrating.

All you can do is 1. Get a CCW or 2. Get a UPIN. For the latter, on your next Delay, ask the guy for a NICS resolution card and record the NICS Transaction Number

If you are nervous there is some type of registration and your nephews could get in trouble because the guns are "in someone else's name", rest assured there is no such registration in the vast majority of the US despite what the media or your average under educated gun buddies would have you believe.

Not to mention if anyone was ever interested enough to try to track down who originally purchased the guns, you've probably got way bigger issues on your hands than explaining it was a gift from your uncle.

Thanks Propagandalf,

The thought ran through my mind after I read what I had posted. My grandfather gave each one of his grandsons those H&R Jr.'s on our 10th birthday. That would have been 1969 for mine. Good luck to anyone checking those records.

I have one instance involving finger printing on my record that was expunged.

Delayed every single time.

That's the best explanation I've heard about the TWIC phenomenon. Thanks.

All of our guys, and I, have TWIC cards. I've never been delayed, and to my knowledge none of our guys have either. But your info helps explain why so many people complain that TWIC = delay.

I have never been delayed and I can count offhand 6 purchases in the last 3 years. Takes about 15 minutes, tops.
Of course, they were all lost in the Biloxi Marsh this past fall.....
