gun project worth it?

looking at buying a used O/U from a guy. Its a good italian brand and works great, but its had a rough life. Wood and bluing is bad scratched up. Could I disassemble it and refinish the wood and have it sandblasted and re-blued? There's no engraving to worry about and I know it wont bring back lost value--thats not what this is about. Ya'll think this is worth it for a project?

This is the wrong way to make it better. Just the blueing is gone or is there pitting also?

Visible slight film of rust in a few places, metal doesn't appear pitted. Scratches don't go into metal.

I can't for the life of me think of the product right now, but on a gun forum I used to post on, one of the gunsmiths used steel wool and this liquid to remove rust and then he would blue it.

You can use CLP and a brass brush to remove surface rust. Post some pics of the gun.

x2. Also you could always just cerakote the metals on it so that you'd never have to worry about the rusting issues again

I've heard Flitz works good to remove surface rust

I think it has abrasives in it and will remove the bluing

This is what I would do if you aren't worried about retaining the original look by re-bluing. Bluing is for gun safe queens. I think they even have a ceracote or duracote that looks similar to bluing. I fixed up an old beat up Marlin .22. Put a flat black Duracote on the metal and an olive drab bed liner like material on the wood. The gun looks good and is hunter proof. Now if your paying big money for a collectible gun, that's a different story.

000 steel or copper wool, with any light oil will take off surface rust.

this gun could have been had it been taken care of. Theyre going for $1500 on gun broker in great condition. Buddy wants $600, which is fair considering. I just want to get it as close as possible back to looking good. Its gonna make an awesome pheasant/dove/quail gun.

Duracote is awesome. I had it put on an old XD I used to have. I was getting some night sites put on at the same time, and the guy here does awesome work. I must have put thousands of rounds through it, carried it a ton, and the duracote held up very well.

Pretty sure Flitz is safe to use on a hot blued gun.

Flitz, MAAS, etc. all have fine abrasive in the compound. They can remove fine scratches from hardened steel, they will definitely remove bluing or any thin surface finish if not careful.

I would take the wood furniture off, strip it and clean that thoroughly with Dawn soapy water and let it dry. You might do some research on how to raise scratches with an iron... sometimes a scratch is just dented, not gouged. Be careful not to change the overall dimensions or shape. After it's completely dry, start rubbing it down with Boiled Linseed Oil. It's going to take a few days to cure, and it's somewhat labor intensive, but just remind yourself: "I'm restoring about $700+ worth of value to this beautiful gun, and I'm doing it myself".
While the stock is off, gently rub off the rust... you said a light film without pits. So use some denim and oil,and go in the direction of the grain (usually going to be along the length of the barrel, not going in rings around it). If it's heavy rust, use brass wool with the oil. Go slowly, you can get the rust without getting the blue.
Then, clean the gun down, and apply Johnson's Paste Wax in the yellow can to all the external blued steel. Wax seals out water, do it dry and rub it until it's gleaming. The wax will protect from fingerprints too.

From the Flitz website.
quote:
Can Flitz be used on Gun Bluing? As long as the gun has been blued during manufacturing, or hot-blued. This type of bluing is actually made part of the metal. Flitz will clean and protect the barrel inside and out without any oily film or danger to the inside of the barrel. If the gun has been cold-blued, then the bluing has been painted on. Flitz will treat this like graffiti and clean it off of the surface of the barrel. Check with a qualified gunsmith to be sure.
