Since they don't honor my LA permit, do I still let the officer know if/when I get pulled over that I'm a CC holder?
At first I thought this was a joke. If you have a loaded gun in your car let alone on your person, you're in deep shite. California is perhaps the worst state for gun ownership. They have gun registration so get ready to jump through hoops.
Sure hope you dont have any magazines over 10 rounds and any semi auto firearms because its about to get tighter over there.

There are limits on how much magazines can hold. I looked into maybe moving out there, and I would have had to get modified magazines for my XD.

First off, welcome. You, me and Mung are the only OBers brave enough (dumb enough) to wade the treacherous waters of CA gun laws. CA ain't that bad place if you're willing to compromise for a bit.
What County did you move to? That will greatly affect your ability to attain a CC permit in CA. It's generally up to the sheriff to issue the permits so it can vary across the state.

What County did you move to?
And I will reiterate, I'm not going to be carrying... My gun will stay at my apartment, loaded. I did want to be familiar with the ins and outs of it though.

Hope you find your way back to Louisiana. And out of the land of "Fruits and Nuts".
I'm sure Louisiana will keep your place warm.
Also, make damn sure you follow the rules dealing with changing your car tags over to Cali...or Louisiana will haunt you for your life (like over 20 years).

LINK - more gun laws passed
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Democrats in the California Senate approved a wide-ranging series of gun control bills Thursday, reviving an effort to significantly tighten California's already strict gun laws in the wake of last year's terrorist attack in San Bernardino.
Lawmakers voted to outlaw the sale of assault weapons with easily detachable magazines and to require that people turn in magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds. They also backed a variety of other measures aimed at restricting access to guns and ammunition or limiting the carnage they can inflict.
The effort drew a sharp rebuke from gun rights supporters who say squeezing lawful gun owners even further won't make people safer.
It also laid bare tense differences in personality and strategy between senior California Democrats. Legislative leaders are rushing to head off a ballot measure advocated by Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, a fellow Democrat, asking voters to enact many of the same policies. They worry the initiative will fail at the ballot box or fire up gun rights supporters, potentially increasing turnout of conservative voters who could give Republicans an edge in close districts.

Friggin this! With LA short on $ they are going after the likes of these and insurance gaps from years ago. Insurance companies can only go back 7 yrs for proof but my BIL got a notice from the state that he had a gap from mar-apr 2002! $650!! Thanks JBE

Born and raised in Cali and own many guns so let me clear things up.
As a state, we have the most restrictive gun laws. However, certain cities like New York City and Chicago are actually much worse.
Regarding the right to carry, it varies by county.... I live in Los Angeles and thats a for sure no go.... I don't really know about San diego's laws
For magazines, 10 (not 7) is the maximum capacity
Regarding bringing in your guns from Louisiana, that is perfectly legal. You will just need to pay a nominal fee to register them. Bringing in any magazines more than 10 rounds is a felony.
Lots of Cali's gun laws are more nuisances than actually restrictive. 10 day waiting period, 30 days between the purchase of another gun, etc.
its really the gun enthusiasts that have issues with the Cali laws. Your average joe shmo that just wants to buy a glock 17 for home defense and maybe take to the range a few times a year probably won't mind the 10 day wait or the magazine restriction.
If you are an enthusiast you are fricked. The absolute worst gun law is the California safe roster. The state has made it next to impossible to buy any of the latest and greatest guns. If there are any guns you have been thinking of buying get them now in Louisiana, it's perfectly legal to bring them in. For anyone that knows the difference between a gen 3 and gen 4 glock, the "roster" is by far the worst gun law in California.
I'm only interested in semi auto handguns so that's my expertise. I don't think there are any restrictions on revolvers (50 caliber is illegal though). Long guns have some restrictions as well, I think the bullet button is the biggest gripe, I'm not exactly sure what it is though.
I recommend checking out Calguns forums. It's basically the tiger droppings of the gun world.

I think that is where they want you to have a fixed magazine. If you want to remove the magazine it requires a special tool. Can't just push a button and change magazines.

I would rather visit a place with more freedom. Maybe Cuba.

Like i said I don't know shite about long guns, but if that's the case that's awful. The state wants semi-autos handguns to have silly things like magazine disconnects and loaded chamber indicators. Those things are dumb. The bullet button sounds much worse.

e state Senate on Thursday approved sweeping new restrictions on using guns in California in response to the December mass shooting by two terrorists that left 14 dead in San Bernardino.
Lawmakers approved 11 bills including measures mandating background checks for Californians buying ammunition and outlawing the manufacture and sale of semiautomatic rifles with detachable magazines.

Another measure approved Thursday would ban the possession of large-capacity magazines, those holding more than 10 bullets. Sen. Loni Hancock (D-Berkeley) told her colleagues that large-capacity magazines were found at the scene of the San Bernardino

Moon Flour, OG. Be careful, don't get crossways with the left handed gestapo. You could be facing serious ramifications, doing hard time, or even worse in your case, being forced to eat a ham sammich..

my worst fear!
As implied before, I am not a gun enthusiast. I don't intend on purchasing any guns while I'm here. I have a .38 special for self defense that stays in my apartment at all times. When I was in Louisiana, it would come around with me when I took my car.
I assume I register the gun with the police department?
Thanks for all the feedback, and encouragement to move back home, gang. But I think I'll be staying for a while
I'm mostly concerned with the car insurance / registration thing at this point.
