Im sure you will get a few good on topic responses here but, what you should do is go to Eastmans.com and go to their forums.

The people there are all elk/mule deer hunters and most live in the west.

For the record, I will be going to kill an elk in New Mexico next year with a good friend who's father-in-law just so guides for Quinlan Ranch.

1. Archery, black powder, or rifle?
2. Private land or national forest ?
3. You want to have to draw a tag or looking for over the counter tags or landowner tags?
4. Want to stay in a lodge or cabin or would you prefer a back country horseback hunt in tents?
5. What is most important aspect to you? Experience, coming home with meat, antler score, seeing some pretty country?

That's extremely low unless you want to shoot a small 5x5 or something.

1) rifle
2) doesnt matter
3) looking for over the counter/landowner. that was one of the reasons we were looking at new mexico. i was told you get over the counter there. is that true?
4) which ever is the cheaper route. i personally like the idea of horseback in tents
5) actually killing. doesnt need to be a boone and crocket. just want the experience, killing a bull, and see some country

the reason we were thinking around 4 to 5k was because when i googled "guided new mexico elk hunts" the first page was loaded with 4 to $4500, hunts. i am just leery of booking a hunt without hearing first hand knowledge of it. we went ocellated turkey hunting last year and got some great advice from wiltznucs and it made me feel alot better about going after talking with him. btw, i was thinking 4 - 5k license NOT included, if that makes a difference.

I'll need some pictures. A 6x5 going over 400" is like a 6 point scoring 150"

I am by no means an expert and my advice is worth exactly what your paying for it. Colorado is the only over the counter tags I know off. Many states have landowner tags but rules vary. Wyoming, for example, only allows the landowner to use the tag. Utah has a great program if landowner tags but costs are very high. New Mexico has landowner tags but prices vary a lot statewide.

Here is a list of a couple hundred outfitters in NM. Call and talk with them and CHECK REFERENCES!! Never understand why more people don't do this. It's a huge investment. It pays to make a few calls and talk hunting with a few strangers.

The best elk hunts in NM go for over 20k. And they have waiting lists. Crazy. I think 4-7k is a more realistic budget all inclusive of travel.

Heard good things about this outfit but no personal experience.

So jelly. Would love to do that one day. I've been considered looking into a spot and stalk mule deer hunt.

Oregon does too. I'll be buying a general coast, second season, rifle bull tag. It's spike or better.

For out of state, or residents only?

Montana was over the counter for residents but not out of state.
