Gsp for duck hunting
Posted by A_bear on 9/24/13 at 7:43 pm00
I've read a few threads on here about German shorthairs but couldn't find how they do with ducks. I've read in other places that they're good retrievers but they can't handle the cold. Considering our winters aren't much of a winter, was wondering if any of y'all use a gsp for ducks in louisiana all duck season. I want a gsp because I want a family dog to keep inside but want it to hunt doves, ducks, squirrels and most likely blood trail deer. Any input on the subject is appreciated.
I have 3, from time to time you find one that really likes to retrieve, but the rule of thumb is they like to hunt birds and loose a lot of interest once the life is gone from the bird. They act like retrieving dead birds is beneath them...

I got my first shorthair to duck hunt, now I woodcock hunt... I found that I really enjoyed watching pointing dogs work, but there is no comparison between a retriever and an shorthair. They can be made to retrieve but you can't make them like it...

Mine will retrieve but has a short attention span. How the hell will you get one to keep still long enough in a blind. Mine can't stop moving. The stay command is like the end of the world to him.

Well this isn't good. Sounds like a bad duck dog!

Hunted over one a couple times and he is a hell of a dog.

And can be more than a handful as a pet. If you think a GSP makes a better "inside family dog" than a lab you should research a bit deeper.

Thanks for the replies. I haven't looked into the wirehairs. Not a fan of chessies. I have looked at pudlepointers but don't know too much about them. I've been wanting a gsp for a while and I'll be getting a dog shortly after I move into my new house. I have a 2 year old and have heard gsp's are rambunctious but I don't know anyone who has one. If it can't handle 50 degrees that's not good. That'd be useful for early teal and that's about it.
