Family and I looking to get a new dog. We had two beagles years ago but they passed away when my son was little. Currently two kids 5 girl and 9 boy

Thinking about golden doodle, but prices are 1500-2000 for a dog. Really like the bread but man that is a lot for a dog. Have never really bought a dog before (beagle were 10 bucks) need some advice if that is even a rational amount to spend on a family pet (it isn't IMO) but maybe that is what breeds cost now?

Other general thoughts?

I got a golden doodle from a rescue in Pensacola. They have them pretty regularly, I think my wife found the rescue group on Facebook or petfinder. I can get the info for you if you are interested. They usually have them from about 3 years to about 6 years old.

I spent about $1500 for my Black GSD. Most beautiful dog I have seen. Worth it for looks alone imo.

I spent $1800 on my English bulldog. He's fat, lazy, stubborn, slobbers, sheds, and farts.

Worth every penny

You need to ask yourself what you want from a dog. Inside, outside, active, big, small, hunter, not, etc. Don't pick a breed before you know the traits you want. Second small dogs have small bladders and tend to have trouble not peeing in the house. Some breeds, have more of a hound smell than others...

We've spent a couple thousand for each of our dogs and they are worth every penny and more.

Designer mutts can be expensive. If it's just going to be a pet and you aren't sold on that bread then try another flavor.

Thanks all, good advice all around. Have done the smelly hound thing. Loved my beagles but they stunk and were stupid as all get-up.

Looking for a retriever style dog (L-M) w/o the insane shedding which is why goldendoole is attractive.

Merry Christmast, thanks!

Try rescues before spending that kind of money.

I'd only spend that kind of money on the "-doodle" breeds. I've spent enough on robot vacuum cleaners and maids to make up for the shedding of a lab, that I'd easily come out ahead just paying for a labradoodle.

the fact that people will pay that for a mutt is crazy. why not just buy a golden and be done with it if thats what you want? the chance that you would have a dog that has medical issues when you create a hybrid are much greater.

That all being said, goldens are great family dogs. If you want a good one be prepared to be spend in the 1k range.

I personally think a pembroke is a great family dog as well. Its damn near as smart as the golden in a smaller package. I had one that i had to put down and that was the smartest animal i've ever been associated with. But again.... be prepared to pay for one, but its well worth it.

My advise is rescue a dog from a shelter , there are thousands that need help and they make great dogs. I have seven so I've done my part. Best one is a Pit BTW, second is a Rat Terrier. They all get along because I think they know how lucky they are. If you do get a large dog you are going to have to exercise it and not just putting it in the back yard. If you get some sort of working breed like a border Colley or bird dog, they have to have a Job or they are miserable. IMHO.

Good luck.

get a rescue
you'll save a life and every time he greets you or licks your face or curls up next to you you will be reminded that he's alive and happy because of you

a good dog gives more than he gets, here's your chance to even that out
