Not a bad idea if you can afford it.

It's not that difficult fishing around Grand Isle in the summer. There are some not so secret spots that are easy to find.

1. The rocks in Caminada pass.

2. The beach in front of Elmer's island. Just hang a right as you come out of Caminada pass by bridgeside.

3. The rock jetties in front of the state park. This is on the opposite end of he island from Bridgeside. For a smoothier ride cut through the bay to get through and loop around the East end of the island. You can't miss them.

4. Islands in the bay behind Grand Isle to the North. I have fished them with some success but I'm not as familiar with these. It's trial and error. Hop from island to island till you find them.

What who me said was pretty solid advice. Get your hands on some live croakers and hit the beach. You'll be just fine. Bridge side has the best croakers on the island.

Make sure you have a good anchor for the beach to hold boat and if fishing the rocks in the pass idle for a bit and see how current pulls boats (if current is present). Dont get too close to rocks - currents can rip through the pass at times but generally a great place to start. Also when exiting the pass dont hang a right roo soon to get to the beach in front of Elmers - shalow areas exist close to the beach.

If you decide to go with a guide, try Capt. Craig Matherne. Really nice guy.

You could literally keep moving down the beach all the way to Venice till you find fish. If there's tide, and the wind isn't crazy, you'll catch.

If you go back into barataria bay, look for the Independance Island Reef. I think they did a resto project and there are mooring bouys. Not sure how the fishing is now, but it used to be awesome. Quess Bless/Bess?, Bassa Bassa Bay, Saturday Island, Oyster reefs (marked by white poles) behind 4 Bayous.

Good Luck!

Can you just run to the east side of the island on the bay side, or do you have to pick your way through? Seems to me it gets shallow at times.

yes, you can run all the way through right behind the island. I do it all the time. once you get to the channel markers, just run with them and paralell the island.

Capt Zutie

I'm sure he is booked up Fri - Sun all summer, but may have some week days available. If he can't put you on fish, no one can.

I heard there is a guide that will go out with you on your boat for like $350 day, but I don't have a name, maybe call Sand Dollar or Bridgeside and ask them.

What do you want to catch?

Sheephead? Get a jig head and put a piece shrimp on it and hit any platforms that you come across (just outside of bridge side). From to the opposite the island from BridgeSide and hit the platforms there.

Bull red? Get some cut bait(mullet, etc) and drop it to the bottom in the pass or along the beach.

Trout? Hit the jetties like everyone said

Reds? Back bay

Buoys are gone on independance island. Only lasted 1 summer. U can run the channel behind the island with no trouble. Can also start at the rocks and work your way down them. Usually pick up at least a few At each set. Also the wellheads in the bay are hit or miss, but a small head can hold a lot of fish
