Want to get my dad one of these for his 60th birthday coming up. We're pretty much amateur fishermen and fish mainly Lake P and Rigolets areas, the electronics on his boat are extremely outdated. Budget is about $5-600 tops. The main ones I've been looking at are the Raymarine dragonfly 7, the Lowrance elite-7, and the garmin 50dv or 70dv (prob too pricey).

Anybody have experience with these or another suggestion?

Lowrance elite-7,

Helped a buddy install one of these, it's nice but we had to update the maps through another company for it to be realtime. Can't remember the company name off hand, but they are local and sold at Puglia's, etc. Someone here will know.

If your dad iisn't very familiar with gps/sounders, I'd go with the best Garmin you can get in your price range mainly because of the ease of use. I've been using gps since they came out many years ago (aviation) and I've used almost every brand and Garmin has always been the most user friendly. I've got a Lowrance 5 HDI in my boat and it's not very easy to use. From what I've seen, Hummingbird is even worse. Garmin may not have "the best" gps/sounders units, but they are definitely the easiest to learn and use.

So basically, if you've got the best unit in the world but don't know how to use it, it's useless. Get him a Garmin. My 2 cents.

I have a Garmin 546s, it is a combo unit (depth finder). You can't go wrong with a Garmin.

I agree, ease of use is definitely an important factor if not the most important. It took the old man awhile to master his iphone

If you aren't looking for new I have a Garmin 545s with transducer and tracks and waypoints for a good bit of Venice. I probably have some info from over where you are too as I fish there some. I would sell for $300 if interested. I would suspect the unit is about 5 years old.
