Golden Meadow catfish lake

taking my young nephew down to the area later this week after the winds die down. Haven't fished the lake in several years. I was thinking just tails under cork drifting the lakes ,points , cuts ect. Any advice to help put this youngster on some fish would be greatly appreciated.

Don't know about catfish lake but I was checking out the house boat docked at Bason's yesterday afternoon and there were four of five boats anchored 50 yards off from the ramp catching trout.

On what? You must have been the only boat that did. It took us long enough Saturday and the wind was worse Sunday

Canal south of mine. Near lake bully camp. Live minnows on a jighead. Lots of throwbacks finished on matrix.
Found a spot they were stacked in. Soft bite. Couldn't feel it with the rods rigged with mono.

Great. Todd Masson will have a map and GPS coordinates of your spot by the weekend.

It's a pretty big area. Doubtful anyone finds it. Not worried. I keep a log of all conditions when we do catch. People were driving by us all day

In my opinion you would be wasting your time in the main lake this time of year. You will need to find a canal with 5-7 feet of water in the center and fish the deeper water. The bite is very, very subtle when it's cold so corks may be next to useless. You may even want to try by the pipes next to the landing. When the temps drop the specks stack up in the deep water there.
I go small when the wind has emptied the marsh by using a smoke sparkle beetle on a red jighead. I go with a fairly slow steady retrieve and any hit of weight on the line, I set the hook. many times the weight is just grass or a stick but in the cold you can't really tell the difference. The key to winter fishing is to go slow.
Now if you want to catch some reds, market shrimp under a cork, fished from the bank out to the center of dead end canals will produce. Reds seem to be less affected by the cold water. I usually use the sparkle beetle and fish from the banks across the middle of canals and catch reds close and specks in the deeper water.
One note of caution, if the wind is howling, be damn careful on the lake esp. if you have a small, low gunnel type boat. There has been more than one tragedy on Catfish lake due to wind and small boats. When it's cold you don't have a lot of room for error.

All good points to make. We were going to catfish but after I bought minnows we went back north to launch due to wind

I didn't talk to anyone else that caught at the launch. Everyone said it was tough. Bite wasn't until noon. Only lasted until about 230. Wasn't every cast but consistently every third. All caught in a spot the size of a small car.

Never a problem to share information. There are enough specks and reds for everyone. This time of year it's rare that a greenhorn can come down here and catch a bunch anyway. Hell, I have trouble catching some days and I fish this area all year. With the wind today and tonight the marsh will be low, low, low so be very careful running in the canals around catfish or the sulfur mine. Lots of unmarked pipes and pilings can cost you a lower unit or worse.

we had a depth finder malfunction.... and on days like that.... i was severely handicapped...with out it.

thanks my man! I think I am going to try the deep dead end canals like you said early, then try to fish some water moving out of the marsh if the sun is out. Ill post results, thanks guys.

quite a few of the dead end canals have a shallow end near where it is dammed off. If you can find moving water (water around or through a rock pile) on this shallow end. the fish will sometimes pile up on the flat as the sun warms the water. I usually fish the canal from one end to the other and work my way to the end. as the day goes on the specks may move from the deeper water to the shallows 2-4 feet. Another tactic is to use your trolling motor to slowly troll the center of the canals with a bait hanging out behind the boat. If you pick up a trout or two make note of where and then concentrate your efforts there.

Bully camp and the sulfur mines are not catfish lake... that's closer to PAC.

last weekend there was 5 trucks at the launch and we smoked the fish, this weekend after the article got out the boats were stacked at the north end of the lake "drifting" for trout...
