Going to a fundraiser skeet shoot this Thursday. I've only shot skeet a few times at a neighbors house. Would 15 years of rabbit hunting help me out any? How bad will I suck? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

When you think you are far enough in front of bird add more lead.

Skeet or sporting clays?
When you miss you are shooting behind it

Pay attention to your stance. Keep both eyes open. Relax. If you shoulder your gun properly, you'll hit what you're looking at.

Don't go first. Watch closely and see the speed and trajectory. Like others said, you'll get behind them if you don't lead far enough.
Oh, pick your hulls up as you go. Only load 2 shells in the gun at a time, and don't be a slob.

Zac:
1. Everybody sees leads a little differently.
2. But here's a "general" (rule of thumb) set of guidelines for skeet leads:
LINK
3. Keep in mind that a lot of folks use the term "skeet" when they are really referring to sporting clays.
4. Either way:
a. Have fun.
b. Decide where you're gonna break the target, and set your feet so you'll be readily able to break it at that spot.
c. Keep your head on the gun
d. Shoot in front of the bird.
e. Follow through (keep swinging for a little ways after you're fired at the bird).

If you've been shooting a shotgun your whole life you'll be fine. Just watch someone else go first to see what the pattern is. Skeet is fun. Just don't overthink it.

I'm pretty excited about it, just no idea what to expect. I know most of the guys who will be there and some are pretty competitive about their shooting. Some of them have custom shotguns and I'll be out there with my $180 battle scarred youth 870. So I'll just go out there bust a few and have fun.

Forget leading.
Good stance and proper shouldering with follow through is the key.
Swing through the clay pigeon and pull the trigger as the front sight catches up with the clay pigeon and follow through the shot.
Don't ride the pigeon trying to aim at it or you will consistently shoot behind it.

The guy who taught me teaches to focus on the clay pigeon with your eyes and you should be pulling the trigger as soon as the gun touches your cheek using your hand eye coordination to point the gun and then follow through each shot.

I'm really happy to see someone say "point" and not "aim"

My brother competed in sporting clays nationally with a youth 870 express 20 gauge and did pretty good. It makes for good conversation
You'll probably do better than you're expecting yourself to do.

I shot my first skeet shoot last year and I can tell you that follow through was the big key for me. Once I started following through I started hitting much more consistently

Don't skeet skeet on everybody

Shoot your first round. Get beat. Sit back and drink beer and enjoy the show.
