I have a Glock 23 Gen 4 and I'm looking at trading it towards a 19. I can shoot .40 decently but after trying my buddies 9mm it was MUCH easier to shoot. Cheaper ammo is a plus as well.

My question is with how popular 9mm has gotten recently does the 23 still hold its value?

Ammo/caliber is a non issue. If you can get 300-350 for your Glock, count your blessings! It's a used Glock, nothing more.

9mm glocks hold their value much better than .40s. You're likely going to take a pretty big hit when you sell it.

It does not. .40SW guns are not selling very well for retailers which shows people are not looking to buy them. Also, with the abundance of police trade-in Glocks, which are mostly 22s and 23s, the price for a used Glock in .40SW is somewhere around $325-$350. Now thats not to say you can't find someone who is not savvy on gun prices and does not shop online for guns and get them to give you $450 for it. Properly converting it to 9mm (barrel, extractor, ejector, mags) would likely cost about the same, if not more, than what the difference between selling yours and purchasing a new 19 would be and it wouldn't be as good as a legit 19. So, I would try to sell it first then get a 19 and if I could not sell it then I would convert it.

Once again...
100 bucks for a drop in conversion barrel and you are shooting 9mm out of a G23

no other work required

Idk I pay extra for the reliability of a glock. I don't think I would bet my life on a hodgepodge 9mm

the only new part is the barrel
Its OD is the same as the factory 40, ID is 9mm
works flawlessly

I'm going to recommend he buy a G17 or G19 magazine, too - but folks have reported positive experiences firing 9mm from the .40 mags - I wouldn't necessarily depend on it to defend my life, but it probably works.

Correct, this will result in a 23 that fires 9mm. However, to increase reliability you need to swap some other parts.

I was able to get $400 for my 23. Honestly, I was pretty shocked when he offered that.

G23 is definitely a more difficult pistol to shoot. I carried a 23 on the job for a long time. TheG19 is much easier to handle, especially if you've fired a lot of rounds such as a LEO training day.

The G23 isn't as popular so it probably is worth less in the used market.

They do plenty well enough for the range. For carry I'd buy a couple of factory G19 mags (only cost ~$20 each).

As was mentioned, you technically need to swap out the extractor, extractor plunger bearing & ejector. (The smaller diameter of the 9mm theoretically means you should use the angled ejector).

FWIW I converted a G27 to a G26 years ago -- it never was reliable. Swapped it back to .40 and have it as a spare/back-up pistol.

DISCLAIMER: I am not a certified Glock armorer. But I am an authorized armorer for Lorcin, Jennings, Davis and Raven. So I really am a gun expert.
