I like the size and style of the 226 but want a .45. If I remember correctly, the 220 was much bulkier than the 226?

I wouldn't think so, the P220 is a single stack .45. They're pretty sweet too...legendary gun like the P226.

The base (they have 90 configurations of every pistol now) P220 has identical dimensions to the base P226. The only variance is the P226 is listed as heavier with magazine (and who knows what ammo they're loading), which makes sense because 17 9mm rounds should weigh a couple ounces more than 8 .45.
(ETA: My West German P220 was the best pistol I ever fired, and I shouldn't have sold it, no matter how noble the intention. My Exeter, NH P245 - is the second best, and I'm keeping it until I die.)

Thanks for the clarification. I know that there are 100s of sub models but just trying to decide which base model is the size I want.

Glocks are generic guns, built to be easy to shoot and easy for learn on. 1911's are finely tuned and pure awesome. Smoother trigger and better grips.

Good for you 
Go shoot some different pistols at a range that will allow that sort of thing and decide from there. These guys on here are die hards for their favorite one. The only wrong answers are High Point, Raven, Lorcin, and judge.

You gotta spend a lot more than $500 get any of the advantages you mentioned. I agree with what you said, but its just not in the budget for the OP.

IF you want a .45, you like the P226, and the standard Sig SA/DA trigger is no problem for you, the P220 is probably the best choice. Heavy, but not too heavy, legendary reliability and very accurate. Even my P245 is extremely accurate.
I'm really looking at the modular P250, which combines some of the better characteristics of the Glock 'style' and Sig 'style', plus the flexibility to configure the pistol in various frame sizes and calibers.
