About 2 months ago my dumb arse left a cut up cantaloupe in the trash in my garage for about a week. Fruit flies took it over, and im talking about millions of them.

So i took it off, and washed the trash can with bleach and let it bake in the sun for a few days.

Problem is, now, no matter what kind of trash i put in the trash can, the fruit flies always come back, even if it sits there for 24 hours or so.

I can't even comprehend where they are coming from that quickly. Now they (and gnats) are starting to get in the house. Wife is not happy, but thats not new

How do i get rid of them for good, instead of cleaning the trash can every week?

Fruit fly trap of apple cider vinegar, over ripe fruit in a glass. Cover with plastic wrap and poke small holes in the top. This works well to get rid of the existing ones in your house.

Not sure about keeping them from coming back. May try washin trash can with vinegar and hot water

I made a concoction of apple cider vinegar, water, sugar, and a few drops of dish soap and it has been killing them all week.

They may also be young drain flies which are sometimes confused with fruit flies. A lot of the same things that attracts them attracts drain flies, such as rotten fruit. Had the same problem until I did some research and saw an adult drain fly among the smaller ones.

Clean any dirty dishes in your kitchen sink and remove them. Clean the sink well and then pour liquid plumr down each side of the sink per the instructions on the bottle.

I did the same in the bathroom in the hall closest to my kitchen as well because I saw them hang around that area too. Basically if there is a drain nearby, they want in it.

Follow the instructions and you may have to do it a couple of times but it should kill them. Hot water and bleach won't kill drain flies as their exoskelton is designed to resist water and water born chemicals. The Liquid plumr will eat away at that and kill them for sure.

This. They aren't coming from the trash, they're coming from your drains. Liquid plummer will work but there's also a commercial bacterial product that ends up preventing re-infestation. It's live bacteria that will establish itself in your drains and eat up sludge that they feed and multiply off of.

You might have a rotten tater or onion in the tater bin that you didn't know was there, too. I pour some apple juice and a couple of drops of Dawn dish detergent into a small glass. Kills em dead, but it takes a few days to get them all. And they might be coming from your sink drain. They love sink drains.

Also, if you are able to, set up a fan (the larger the better) and aim it at wherever you think is the source, whether it's the drains or the cans, and let it run non-stop for a few days. If they can't land, they can't lay eggs, and you can disrupt the cycle.

My problem isn't near as bad as OP but I swear I swat one every 10 min and a new one is always around the corner.

It's fruit flies in the garage and gnats in the house. My wife sat a drink down for 10 minutes last night, and there were 4 gnats in there. It's slightly ridiculous.

There's probably a water source they are using, leaking pipe etc.

Our garbage disposal was leaking and they got under my sink real bad, I fixed the leak sprayed some bleach and they are gone.

I hate those freaking things

Set off a couple full release foggers in your garage and house when you know no one will be in there for a few hours.

You are doing the right things. I had regular flies/maggots that wouldn't leave mine, and I had to bleach it multiple times, wash it, and leave it in the sun for a few days

We have had the exact same issue with fruit flies, and now that i read this, maybe even drain flies. We never had any issues before the flood. Our house didn't flood but most around us did. I don't know if the abundance of flies coincides with the flood or if it just coincidence, but my wife set up a glass of apple cider vinegar a few days ago and there were over 100 in there as of last night. It is a disgusting feeling to have an infestation like that. She is a stay at home mom/wife so she keeps up with dishes and household things for the most part. I really need to get to the bottom of it, that's for sure. Definitely helps to see i'm not the only one going through this.

Going through this right now. Going to try the apple cider vinegar and drain gel stuff. Normally I stay away from the laundry room, tonight I looked in there and they are in there as well. I think drain flies are the culprits.
