How much power do you need for everything you want to run? I see mention of the AC @ 480 watts. Is this just for emergencies only or do you plan on using it quite a bit? Because if you use it a lot it's definitely worth the extra money to get the Honda. EU1000 isn't too much more than that you have budgeted. Whatever you get be sure to drain the carbs before you store it. Nothing worse then coming into a situation where you need your generator and it won't start because of old gas tarnishing the carbs.

I just crank mine up about once a month and let it run for about 5 or 10 minutes. Learned that lesson the hard way when we had 17 inches of snow and no power...

I HIGHLY recommend a manual transfer switch. Easy to install and allows you to safely use internal house wiring (no back feeds, etc.)
Pick 6 or 10 circuits to power, keeps hassle of running extension cords, and you can run ceiling fans, house lights, etc.

I would add to your setup if you can afford it, I have a 10 circuit with my 6K watt and it is very convenient and safe. Makes decision to hookup generator a 5min process during outages.

Here's a cheaper method:
Buy romex, a plug, and a breaker
shut off main
plug into your main panel
turn off everything you don't need
start generator
????
profit

So...backfeeding which he mentioned in his post?
We have to back feed for a few banks we work for to do some inspections and I hate it because it's pretty damn dangerous IMO.

AND BACK FEED POWER TO GUYS FIXING THE ELECTRIC LINES!
You need a 200 amp disconnect box to do it RIGHT.

If your main is good, then you'll be set. One way to test that is shut it off and check. If you wanna be fancy about it, pull the meter. Still way cheaper ($30 maybe)
I've done that exact thing to probably 30 houses. It literally takes 20 minutes if the breakers are labeled correctly

They never are. I really hate back feeding vacant houses because You never know WTF is wrong with them and it's a huge liability to take on. We now refuse to do it actually.

I can see that being a huge fire hazard because you have no idea of the condition of the wiring, but doing it on a regular house is fine IMHO

Save up another $300 bucks and get a Honda EU2000i from Mayberry Sales for $899 shipped.It weighs only 46 pounds and is so quiet you won't believe it is actually running.

I have used one to power a frig, 5000BTU window unit TV and a couple of lights. The fuel tank is 1.1 gallons and ran that load for 6 hours per tank full. There are aux fuel tank setups for extended run time without refueling. I ran this setup for 14 days with no issue, I was so impressed I have since bought a EU3000i from Mayberrys.
