I have a 5500 continuous/8500 max that will run my entire house (2000 sf) minus the main a/c. The ability to run the ceiling fans is a bid deal and this wired to your house can do it. All we did was buy a few small window a/c units and we were ok after a few major storms.
This.. Turn the main power and a/c breaker off, turn the generator breaker on...Make sure it's at least a 30amp generator...
I picked up a 5.5kw Troybilt with a 10 HP B&S engine after Katrina, had the house hard wired into the beaker panel.. Works perfect..
Have a 6000 BTU a/c for the bedroom and a 12000 BTU for the main downstairs... worked great during Gustove.. Didn't need it for Isaac since we didn't lose power..
Burned about 5 gallons every 12 hours...

I don't have a window that accepts a window unit or else I'd be running it.
just so you know, home depot and lowes sell a room A/C unit with wheels, that doesn't install in a window, just a hose that vents to the outside. also, all the condensation is evaporated and vents to the outside with the exhaust, they are not real expensive.

I'm backfeeding the whole 110 side of my house
We're looking at this option along with wiring the breaker. If we plug into the wall to back feed everything should come on but the central air.

Get a breaker, a plug, and some romex. Plug that into your main box. Turn off main coming into your house from the street and turn on whatever breakers you want running

My 4500 runs a window unit fan and lights...that was the night/sleep configuration. Swapped power strips around for the day time and ran fridge and freezer and computer/direct tv and lights and fans during day. This configuration was used during the 4/27/11 tornado outbreak in N. Alabama.
New house now has a generator cut off switch/separate breaker box. Breakers to run kitchen, living room and master. I can run a window unit if necessary that way.

I backfeed 220 through a breaker (no plug) and run everything except central air water heaters and dryer with a 7kW rig. Works great.
This is dangerous shite if you don't understand how house wiring works though. They don't call them suicide plugs for nothing.

Like everyone is saying, do yourself a favor and back feed it to the house. I purchased a 7,000 watt Troy Bilt, from Lowes, over a year ago and had to put it to work earlier this week. We had complete power in the house other than the main AC unit. I am a very satisfied customer.

You guys with the portable gens. If you have natural gas at your house do yourself a favor and look into installing a "tri-fuel" kit. You can put a quick connect hose from the gen to the natural gas outlet with a cut off valve and NEVER have to purchase gasoline again. It burns cleaner, doesnt gum up the carb after setting up all year and is much safer than pouring gasoline around a hot motor.
I have a whole house now, but my old 6500 Coleman could be connected in minutes and when all the gas stations were out of gas during Gustave, we were good to go.

It all depends on your noise tolerance. HONDA 2000's run quiet but cost around a grand. You can get higher wattage ones at HF, but can be louder.
I have a cheapo from Aldi, 2000 watt. But it runs things I want to run, but not all at once. The key to generator life is the gas. Buy ethanol free gas and run it once in a while, like every month or 2 for 20 mins with a fan or something. Also keep the oil level up, they have low oil level shut-off switches.
There's you tube videos showing all sorts of setups, research.
