Wood. It is cheaper, and I like the smell of wood.

We are about to build a house also and have been pondering this same question.

I think I will use gas. It just seems that it would be cleaner and less hassle. The wood burning fire pit will require periodic cleaning out of ashes, etc. Also, it can be a hassle sitting around the fire and always fighting the smoke.

IMO, a little occasional cleanup outside is well worth it. Run a gas line for a gas ignitor and you can always add a gas log later.

I personally like wood, as it puts out a lot more heat....plus, I like the noises that the fire makes...

downside of wood is that it is just a whole lot more hassle (i.e. cleanin out the pit, smoke, etc.)...

it would also depend on the nature of the area where you are putting the pit...if you are doing something like a spotless, modern-styled area around a pool, then gas would probably fit in better. if I used gas, I would get some IR heaters to keep the place a little warmer...

It's got to be wood if you want it to put out any heat.

Very metrosexual. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing......

After spending close to 2 hours splitting firewood today, I vote wood burning and it's not even close.
