If you get at the right angle with a duck load you can blast them pretty far with a shotgun. My brother and I used to have contests to see how far we could launch them off logs into the pond while they were out getting sun

Yeah- the hell they won't chase you! I had one I purposefully hooked with a crank bait, he got off and came straight at the boat fast as he could.

I think there's a lot of people who don't understand that everything coming in their direction isn't "chasing" them. If you're all hyped up on irrational fear of the man-eating snake, I guess it might seem that way in the heat of the moment.

Most snakes don't have great vision, they're all deaf, and none of them are geniuses. When they get startled, or scared, they head for cover. Sometimes they don't realize that's right where a person happens to be.

I'd LOVE for someone to post a video of a snake ACTUALLY chasing someone intentionally. You know, to offset the countless ones I could post of them not wanting anything to do with people. "Pawpaw said..." isn't really scientific proof.

I don't know what you mean by this.

I grew up where the bayou ran 150ft behind my parents house. There was 2 cotton mouths on the bank. I walked down there and threw some pieces of bricks at them. They swam across the bayou and came back 3 times. Each time I would throw a piece of brick at them and they would swim across and come back. It wasnt that they were pissed at me for doing it. It was because they wanted to be on my side of the bayou and I didnt let them. Thats territorial.

More often than not they will leave, but every once in a while they will stand their ground.

SERE school in Florida

Cousin of mine trained somewhere there in Florida at an "undisclosed location". Hearing him tell it, military personnel were sent to the training grounds for several days ahead of scheduled start, to capture and relocate venomous snakes in order to make training safer.

It's been a while since I spoke of it with him, but I recall him saying that dozens and sometimes HUNDREDS of pygmy rattlers would be captured and relocated from the area, as well as fewer numbers of copperheads, timbers, easterns and moccasins as well as the occasional coral.

Even with the removal, he said that the pygmys were still very thick and two soldiers were bitten during training but thankfully both received dry bites and were able to finish training after medical eval.

I was night fishing on a little pond and one came across pond to my light within feet. Refused to leave and continued to try and get at me. I finally killed him with a limb but he was super aggressive and came probably 50-75 yards over to check me/light out.

never heard this before..... but pygmy was a culprit in one..... eastern the other....

I know someone very well that was a lead training cadre there at several different times - sent him a missive to ask about removal.

All the Cottonmouths either ran away except for the one that stayed in place and showed no threatening behavior.

talked to two people that had extensive time as training cadre leaders there(in FL)..... both never heard of the snake round up......and doubt it ever happened - other than "instructors" playing around and having fun with it.. but not a concerted effort. some of those dudes are called "snake eaters"

I don't give a rats arse what this video says.

Turkey hunting a field next to a bayou last spring I had one slither straight toward me sitting on a milk crate with the front quarter of its body up off the ground like it was hunting human thigh meat. My 10 year old was right on the other side of me. Blew his head off 2 feet away from the end of the barrel and screwed my hunt.

Freaked me out to say the least. Was like it was hunting me.

I ran across one in a creek one time checking a minnow trap that vehemently disagrees with you.

They do have a distinct odor, don't they? When I used to go out in the lakes and bayous and swamps I swear I could smell them and then sure enough not long after I'd sense that smell I'd see one. I've told people that and they act like I'm crazy.
