I recently purchased a home that came with a stacked set of an LG front loading washer and LG dryer. The house was rented by others before I bought it, and I don't think the prior renters ever cleaned them.

After a couple of months of living here, I've noticed that the clothes, sheets and towels are not getting clean. I have run tub clean cycles through the washer with bleach, tub cleaner, baking soda and dish detergent, and hand cleaned all of the gunk from around the tub and gasket-and it makes no difference. I also drain it religiously and leave the door open after a wash. And all of the laundry is still funky after washing and drying. Bad funky. Moldy funky. To the point where I think everything comes out with mold on it including the sheets and it causes me to wake up feeling like a cat has slept on my face.

Has anyone else encountered this? Is there a remedy? I'm at wit's end and about to just sell these things. But the problem is that the space will only accommodate a stacked washer and dryer... so are there any recommendations for a good set that actually cleans clothes?

Thanks in advance.

Once you get it figured out sell them and buy an old Kenmore or something. If not then the speed queen. My Kenmore has rust and looks like shite but it's 30 years old and washes the hell out or clothes. I've wasted too much money and time on HE washers. The ones with glass lids etc. Never again.

The Samsung front loader I had didn't clean clothes worth a shite. It had an "economy wash" style that was your only option, which was supposed to save water. Always ended up having to doing another rinse cycle or 2 to get all the soap out. Plus it didn't have an agitator so the clothes just sloshed a little bit and it sounded like a jet was taking off. Never again.

ETA: my bad, didn't read all the way through the first time. I didn't keep it long enough to expirience the smelly problem. Sorry.

I have an old set at my old house that unfortunately don't have a place here. I wish they did.

My front load washer has a drain on the bottom that I clean out periodically and it gets really nasty. I'm not sure if that's what u mean by draining it frequently but check into that. I have a GE so if may be different.

Vinegar?

Best bet is to sell them and get a normal one. Front load water saver ones never work, and always stink. I've had top load stacked ones in apartments before. No idea what brand though

Yep, welcome to the world of front loading washers. We've tried all the tricks one reads about on the 'net, but the quality of the wash is still very inferior to the "dated technology" top loading washer we previously had. Every now and then you'll read of someone who praises the front loading washers, but most owners curse them. Biggest waste of my money I've EVER experienced. Your best option: cut your losses and get rid of them; find some way to reconfigure the area so you can buy a top loading washer. Good luck.

Try cleaning the door seals, mold can hide here.

also verify the machine is pumping all the water out between cycles.

its because the washer is growing thick layers of mold and mildew inside it. all the front loaders do this because it never drains all the water out, you dont see it but its still in there under the drum.

the solution is NEVER keep the door closed, hang a towel or something over the door so it stays open for the water to dry up. do that and you wont have any more problems.

to solve the present issue run a load of just soapy hot water and about 2 cups of straight bleach to kill whats growing in there and then run a second cycle of just hot soapy water to rinse out any remaining bleach, do this after every wash for about 5 or 6 cycles and you should have killed off the mold and mildew in there

Exactly what we ended up doing after staring at yet another expensive repair bill. We expanded the closet they were in to allow full sized units and threw the facking things out. Stack units are just horrible.

My suggestion is to sell that set on Craigslist and get the old style stacker with the agitating washer on the bottom and the dryer in top.

Those front loaders are pretty but they never seem to function properly.

I've never has an issue with my KenMore front loader. It was a $1800 unit I got marked down for scratch/dent at sears for about half that price. Clothes do get musty in there if you leave the clothes in there for more than 4-5 hours. As long as I pull the clothes out soon after the cycle is done it does a great job.

There is probably a drain cleanout on the front of the unit. Mine is on the bottom right behind a little round cover. open that up, get a shop vac, some towels and slowly open the inner round PVC drain line. It is a cleanout. Pull that out of there and clean all that out...

Keeping it clean helps but one thing that hasn't been mentioned that is very important is to use the recommended amount of detergent. These are high efficiency washers and most times people put way too much detergent in there

That being said I will never own another one. Too much hassle to keep clean

Thanks everyone. I've done pretty much what everyone has said to no affect. Cleaned it, drained it, cleaned the filter, left the door open, etc. and will continue to use bleach cycles.

But I think the solution for the time being is to replace the damn things with the old style stackables and when we add on in a couple of years just go back to my old style washer and dryer. I'm sick of waking up feeling like shite then showering and drying off with a dirty towel then wearing musty clothes to work.

Whoever invented these things needs to be shot.

I've had a Bosch front loader since around 2010 with no problems. I use a little vinegar with every wash; put it in the fabric softener section. I never use fabric softener. The door always stays open when it's not in use. I also use Borax occasionally with a load of white clothes to help prevent any mold issues; and every few months, use the Tide brand of cleaner that you run through the machine by itself.

Had a front loader washer that I could never get to clean and I tried every trick I could find. Donated it away and bought a top load that I couldn't be happier with
