I could lay the seats down and have plenty of room...

Or remove the rear seats. Very easy and quick to do.

You will definitely need a 4-door to fit a crate.

Um, we have a 2-door and find that there is plenty of room even when folding the rear seats. But, remove the rear seats and more than enough room.

I just went the other way miss my jeep in the tight spots and hitting the ORV parks but have loved having a bigger vehicle.

I did the same. There are definitely pluses and minuses on each depending on what your coming and from and going too.

Owning a Jeep is all about spacial manipulation. Packing a Jeep is a lot like loading the dishwasher. Rearranging shite to get that last cup on the top rack.

I've owned two different Jeeps, two Grand Cherokees, and a Dodge Ram 1500. I was really close to buying a Tacoma or Frontier about 3 years ago, but I just couldn't find one I liked for a decent price. I sort of missed having a truck after college, and driving the "family car" SUV. I ended up just browsing around on Craigslist and found my current Jeep.

Yeah, they're not made for cargo, but since you can easily remove the backseat, and have a hardtop on it, there's plenty of usable space for anything that isn't too long. I hauled home like 5-6 bales of pine straw in mine last summer. You're not going to be hauling lumber or a dog crate in a 2-door, but a 4-door would be fine. I actually test drove a 4-door at a dealership, but when I saw it was 2WD I didn't even think about buying it.

Hardtop hoists are a must unless you have a friendly neighbor who doesn't mind helping you for 2 minutes. My wife helped me remove the hardtop. Once. Never again. I was unhooking it, and didn't feel like getting the hoist all hooked up and hand cranking it. Asked her to help. I should have taken the extra 10 minutes.

The scene of us two taking the hard top off coudlve won America's Funniest Home Videos.

On the other hand, such footage wouldn't be helpful in a divorce court or custody hearing

I told her not to grab the back window, get one hand under the back corner and the other by the door, and SLOWLY lift it then walk. She tried to pick her side up and shift it to the folding table using her arms. Before I had my hands ready. I had to lift in a hurry and ended up supporting about 80% of the weight as she almost dropped it.
